“BEHIND THE CANDELABRA” DOCUMENTS THE STORY OF SCOTT THORSON PULLING LIBERACE OUT OF THE CLOSET

It makes sense that the Liberace biography “Behind the Candelabra” would land at HBO where they did such a good job with the Jack Kevorkian story. Michael Douglas is still set to play Liberace and Matt Damon is cast as his boyfriend Scott Thorson. (The script is based on Thorson’s book “My Life with Liberace.”) Liberace fell for 17 year old Scott in 1976, and they lived together for five years until drugs and cheating broke them up. Scott Thorson shocked the world in 1982 when he sued Liberace for palimony and revealed all the details of their gay relationship, including the fact that Liberace paid to have Scott get plastic surgery to look more like him! Liberace was devastated. He was adored as a performer but he was forced to lead two lives because he was always in the closet- it’s a fascinating story. She ran down to the lobby, followed by scantily attired Michael, and made a huge screaming scene, attracting a lot of attention from the tabloids. Michael declared himself a “sex addict” and sought treatment. Indeed, stories about him bedding leading ladies and extras in every movie he made were rampant. It took him awhile, but he survived the scandal, was forgiven, and continued making successful movies. Life goes on.

Everyone’s talking about the news that Catherine Zeta Jones checked into a Connecticut hospital facility to deal with her “bipolar disorder.” Granted, she’s had a tough year living with her husband’s illness, but she’s not telling the whole story. Silver Hill Hospital specializes in treating psychiatric disorders combined with substance abuse. The National Enquirer broke this story (although few blogs credited them) in this week’s issue and they revealed that Catherine went right into the detox center of the hospital and checked out after five days. Self-medication might be her main problem. (Above, she accused a photographer of hitting her in the face in London in February)

CATHERINE ZETA-JONES HAD AN EVENTFUL DAY IN LONDON

Catherine Zeta-Jones looked deliriously happy when she met with Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace for an award ceremony. Later she and Michael Douglas had dinner at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant at Claridge’s Hotel. All went well until they returned to their hotel and the doorway was jammed with people. In the middle of the crowd Catherine suddenly screamed that she had been punched! Hotel staffers rushed to her aid and she was seen rubbing her chin, but there seemed to be no lasting damage.

Michael Douglas is confident he will survive, but he didn’t whitewash his condition with his children – he’s been upfront since his throat cancer diagnosis. He didn’t want Dylan, 10, or Carys ,7, to hear frightening things at school or from strangers about daddy’s health. And he’s keeping the kids involved in his treatment – Michael brought them to the hospital to watch him get zapped with radiation. Now if he’s “tired,” they understand. He’s lost weight, but Michael remains upbeat – he says his tumor is responding well to treatment. He’ll have to plump up for his upcoming role as Liberace – due to film next year with Matt Damon as his lover.

THE TRAGEDY OF CAMERON DOUGLAS

What good can possibly come from locking up Michael Douglas’s son Cameron in jail for ten years to life? His track record isn’t nearly as bad as Farrah Fawcett’s son Redmond, but he’s confessed to drug dealing and that is the resulting sentence. He didn’t injure anybody and he didn’t get caught driving under the influence – he’s a danger mostly to himself. It’s a nonviolent, victimless crime. He’s messed up, but these harsh drug laws need to be revised. Personally, we take enormous satisfaction in seeing REAL criminals punished, but this is different. Prison is not always the answer. We feel awful for Michael Douglas, who showed up in court for Cameron.
