We didn’t realize that Rihanna was one of the “friends “ of Katy Perry that Russell Brand couldn’t stand. Before she met Russell, Katy and Rihanna were close buddies – they both loved to party and took time to vacation together. Russell, a recovering addict, avoids the night life that Katy and Rihanna love. He disapproved of the girls’ hard partying and late hours. Rihanna thought Russell was a sourpuss and a wet blanket. When Rihanna didn’t attend Katy’s wedding the friendship was all but over. Now that Katy and Brand are divorcing, we hope the girls will connect for some fun times again. “Friends” of Katy Perry and Russell Brand seem to be leaking lots of stories about their divorce to the press and it’s hard to know who to believe. When they were photographed on different continents at Christmas we KNEW the marriage was in serious trouble. Still, it WAS shocking when Russell filed for divorce this week and it seemed like an ungentlemanly thing to do. In civilized break-ups, the wife is encouraged to do the filing. But TMZ sources say that Katy WANTED Russell to file because of her religious beliefs, and they both planned to be out of town when he did it. Why Russell would choose to be in London – the only place with almost as many paparazzi as Hollywood, is unclear. When you think about it, maybe it wasn’t a good idea for a minister’s daughter to marry an admitted former heroin, alcohol, and sex addict in the first place.
KATY PERRY IS YUKKING IT UP WITH FRIENDS IN HAWAII – NO HUSBAND IN SIGHT
What IS going on between Katy Perry and Russell Brand? First she says she wants to take time off this year to try and have a baby, and now she’s celebrating the holidays WITHOUT her husband! US magazine says Katy and Russell had a nasty spat and she cancelled plans to bring her family to London on a private jet to celebrate with Russell’s relatives. After the argument, Katy took off for Hawaii with friends while Russell stayed alone in the UK. Insiders say Katy doesn’t like Russell’s attitude toward her religious family and he’s not fond of her friends. Celebrating Christmas apart IS a big thing. (Above, Katy in hat on the beach)

We just returned from The Grove where we saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie, and noticed the mall was unusually packed with shoppers, security people, and velvet ropes. And it wasn’t just to see Santa. Katy Perry had been there for a few hours promoting her new fragrance “Meow” that is on sale at Nordstrom. She made a spectacular arrival on the trolley and looked adorable in pink, but rather normal. (We guess she’s giving her overprocessed hair a rest.)
WHAT IS KATY PERRY’S LINK TO JOAN CRAWFORD?
It really IS a small world. Katy Perry has a close “nine degrees of separation” connection to Joan Crawford. Katy’s evangelist mother’s aunt and uncle were successful Hollywood director Frank Perry and his screenwriter wife Eleanor Perry. Frank Perry directed the classic movie “Mommie Dearest” – the Joan Crawford story starring Faye Dunaway. Frank Perry died years before Katy’s career started to rise so he never was able to pull any strings for her.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were in Los Angeles this weekend – they’re pictured here on their way to the Katy Perry concert. It’s odd that the Cruises skipped the black tie event at the Scientology Celebrity Center for it’s 42nd anniversary the same weekend. All the top Scientologists were there – Travolta, Priscilla, Jenna, Jason Lee, Erika Christensen. Juliette Lewis etc. Tom and Katie missed the Scientology party, but they didn’t miss Katy Perry.

What does a mega famous couple do on a quiet Sunday night? Katy Perry and Russell Brand were seen at 8PM meandering down the street holding hands on Larchmont Blvd in LA. (They walked right past us as we sat at La Bottega Marino eating pasta outside.) Russell carried a bag from the Rite-Aid pharmacy and Katy had little or no makeup on, and her hair was mostly pink. She wore a swingy little summer dress. They managed to stroll the street from end to end and window shop and no one paid attention, proving even famous people have slow nights.

Newly blonde Katy Perry seemed to have a Marilyn moment, but the wind didn’t actually catch her mini skirt – her stiff skirt has a built-in flip. She was on the red carpet at The Smurfs premier in New York and it’s a big day because this is Katy’s first role in a feature film. Dozens of celebrities and their voices appear in the movie – Katy is the voice of a Smurfette.

Russell Brand looks a lot more prepared for a bike ride than his wife Katy Perry does. Katy rode through Central Park in a short lacey dress and sandals but she managed to keep her skirt down. The Brands just purchased a 6.5 million dollar house in Los Feliz with seven bedrooms, so it makes one wonder if babies are in the near future or are they having too much fun acting like kids themselves…
