WHO KNEW PENGUINS HAD SO MUCH ENERGY?

Video via The WOW Report
We used to dream of having a pet penguin until we met a penguin handler from San Francisco who told us the birds can be ornery – every morning when he walked into their cage they ran over and pecked him on the knees. But they ARE adorable and this young and irrepressible bird creates a perfect heavy metal mashup

ALEC BALDWIN HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE THE “HORSE INCIDENT”

Alec Baldwin doesn’t look at all bothered by the fact that this equestrian act from the Big Apple Circus appeared on the Letterman show with him. When he was still married to his animal activist wife Kim Basinger, he didn’t think animals should be used for entertainment and he testified to the city council that the use of carriage horses in the park should be banned. Nowadays, he appears a lot more tolerant.

TAYLOR LAUTNER AND FRIEND: TOO CUTE FOR WORDS

Our skillful comrade in blogging, Stephen Saban of The WOW Report, noted an uncanny resemblance between this sweet fuzzy squinty animal (what exactly IS this? A young Llama?) and “Twilight” hottie Taylor Lautner. Do you agree?

KEN WAHL THINKS THE PUNISHMENT SHOULD FIT THE CRIME

We’ve been fans of Ken Wahl since “The Wanderers.” His back injury and retirement from acting was a great loss (he was the Rob Pattinson of the late 80’s early 90’s.) But at least he’s not wasting his time. Nowadays Ken and his wife, pinup girl Shane Barbi, are animal activists and they foster homeless pets. Not long ago, a cat named Timothy was found glued to a Minnesota highway. The cat was rescued but eventually died. Ken was SO outraged when he heard the story that he reportedly picked up his Golden Globe (he won it for “Wiseguy”) and said he’d like to use it to beat the guy who committed that loathsome crime. Now he’s decided to DONATE the Globe toward the $10,000 reward being offered for this animal abuser. Unfortunately, the crime is only a misdemeanor in Minnesota. The long term motive of Ken and Shane is to improve animal protection laws and make sure these sicko abusers are slapped with criminal records.

While New Yorkers are stuck in airports and inconvenienced by their winter storm, the snow is greeted with delight elsewhere. Mercedes is the only polar bear in Scotland. She was recently moved from the Edinburgh zoo to a colder climate and more luxurious accommodations at the Northern Scotland wildlife park. The Scots rescued her in Canada where she was going to be shot after roaming into a town to find food. Mercedes, 27, was overjoyed by the recent snowfall. We can’t resist happy animals.

We never hear and we hardly ever see Howard Stern any more, but he turned up, as usual, for the North Shore Animal League Celebrity Gala at Cipriani in New York. Mrs Stern, Beth Ostrosky, is spokesperson for the no-kill rescue organization and like other celebrities, she and Howard brought their beloved bulldog Bianca to the fundraising party. We miss hearing Howard in the morning since he went to Siruis satellite radio.

Four year old Willy the polar bear lives in a zoo in North Carolina and apparently he’d been showing signs of melancholy. To cheer him up, the zoo surprised him with 5000 pounds of ice cubes and he almost exploded with happiness. Willy wallowed and rolled and nuzzled and licked the ice and seemed to be in complete ecstasy. Until it melted. It reminds us that he would probably be happier back at his arctic habitat.

Sorry to interrupt our Robert Pattinson coverage, but we can’t resist showing you these one month old baby Meerkats born in a Sydney zoo. They are rarely born in captivity. It’s funny how unaware most people were of these sociable animals until Meerkat Manor came on the air. Watch the Meerkats interact in their own little community on Animal Planet.

MICHAEL PHELPS IS DESTINED TO DO THAT VICTORY DANCE

phelpscut.jpg
Michael Phelps and his team won the Olympics freestyle relay – their victory “dance” – with outstretched arms and exaggerated postures – closely resembled the dominance displays of chimps and monkeys! According to the LA Times, the animal world is full of inflated displays of superiority. Birds and cats puff up and strike a pose. Scientists have studied photos of humans and animals in victorious situations and they all behave the same. Even blind athletes do it. Researchers concluded the behavior is innate and the same for all, regardless of what culture or country they came from. Which means Michael can’t HELP doing the victory dance when he wins – it’s like sneezing!
