Rock of Ages

TOM CRUISE’S ROCK OF AGES MIGHT NOT ROCK YOUR WORLD, BUT IT’S FUN

Rock of Ages and Hairspray have a lot in common. Both stories involve a cute young girl and boy struggling for acceptance and kept apart for certain reasons, blasphemous music, and conservative zealots to protest it. Both were hit Broadway musicals. “Hairspray” starred scientologist John Travolta and “Rock” stars scientologist Tom Cruise. Hairspray had 1960’s integration to add heft, Rock had the groupies and rockstars 1980’s phenomenon. Supporting actors are all great. To us it seems Tom Cruise is just too famous to play anything but himself – you just cannot forget who he really is. We wish his Stacee Jaxx character had been performed by an SNL comic because it could have been really funny. That said, the movie IS entertaining (it’s fun to reminisce about Sunset Strip in those days,) more than a little corny, but worth seeing. Just don’t expect too much.

JENNIFER ANISTON AND JUSTIN THEROUX ESCAPE TO PARIS – FAR FROM “ROCK OF AGES”

Jennifer Aniston’s boyfriend Justin Theroux is one of the writers of the “Rock of Ages” movie (it was adapted from the stage play) and they attended the premier last Friday. Right after that, they jumped on a flight to Paris and were seen hand in hand sightseeing today. Did Justin leave town to avoid reading reviews of the movie? “Rock of Ages” is being promoted endlessly – can this musical live up to obvious expectations? It remains to be seen whether we can tolerate exuberant Tom Cruise as an ageing rock star.

IS TOM CRUISE CONVINCING AS AN 80’S ROCK STAR?

Tom Cruise’s movie “Rock of Ages” was favorably reviewed by a guy at Deadline.com, but we’re not so sure. We love the idea of celebrating 80’s music and rock stars, but famous faces in the cast are distracting. We almost wish unknowns were playing the characters so we could get lost in the story. Also, musicals like this are generally more spectacular seen live on Broadway. Take a look at the trailer – will you be in line this summer to see this?

ANGELYNE: A GIRLS GOTTA DO WHAT A GIRLS GOTTA DO

Billboard queen Angeline was spotted cruising the parking lot at Pavilions Market in West Hollywood in her attention seeking Pepto-Bismol pink Corvette. When she got out of her car she opened a pink tinker bell parasol to protect her cleavage from the sun and handed out business cards. The under 30 crowd had no idea who she was, but the older shoppers recognized her from her Hollywood billboards. She opened the trunk of her car and proceeded to sell t-shirts with her picture on them – $20 apiece – four styles available! She confided that one of her shirts would be appearing in the Tom Cruise movie “Rock of Ages.” She would ONLY pose for photos for people who bought a shirt.

RUSSELL BRAND IS NO TOMMY LEE

What’s wrong with this picture? Russell Brand is playing a n 80’s pop star in “Rock of Ages” and he’s dressed up in torn jeans and suspenders, at vintage t- shirt and rockstar wig, and he almost reminds one of Tommy Lee(top right) in his heyday as a member of Motley Crue. Except one thing is wrong – rockers didn’t have facial hair like that – they had smooth babyfaces and were more likely than not to wear lipstick!
