Grace Jones

DOLPH LUNDGREN IN PERSON

SOOO glad to hear that Dolph Lundgren has survived lung cancer after 8 years of treatment! He certainly didn’t look ill when I saw him a few years ago in Gelsen’s supermarket in West Hollywood. I was browsing in the produce department and saw the back of an extremely tall muscular man examining apples. Eventually he turned around, and I recognized Dolph Lundgren. Seeing him reminded me of all the hilarious druggy adventures I wrote about him and then-girlfriend Grace Jones back in the 80’s. (for Star Magazine) Dolph was just a bouncer at Limelight and SHE was the star at that time. I approached Dolph at Gelsens and introduced myself and he couldn’t have been nicer. We reminisced about those wild times and I told him how lucky he was that Sly Stallone, who was VERY sensitive about his height in those days, hired him, at 6’5″, as a Rocky costar, which launched his career. He IS a big blonde muscleman, but Dolph also seems to be a super nice and modest guy–

IT’S STILL ALL OR NOTHING FOR GRACE JONES

Grace Jones has had a reputation for showing up hours late for concerts (sometimes not at all) but she was ALWAYS worth waiting for. The “I Need a Man” singer was gay icon before it was fashionable, and she was the toast of Studio 54 back in the day. We remember when she “discovered” club doorman Dolph Lundgren and he became her boyfriend. Her bizarre presentation and astonishing costumes have never been duplicated. Grace, now 71, headlined Brighton Pride this weekend and knocked ‘em dead…

GRACE JONES: STILL A SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM

One cannot exaggerate how important Grace Jones was to the music and fashion world in the late 70’s and 80’s. Hers was the nightclub act everyone wanted to see because of her extravagance, androgyny, and just plain outrageous demeanor. Experiencing Grace Jones‘ act on New Years Eve was as good as it gets. Of course she was the toast of Studio 54. (Grace was always fun to gossip about: For a few years she was dating Dolph Lundgren – whom she discovered as a door man- and once during a spat she set his pants on fire!) The La Vie En Rose singer appeared at the Toronto Film Festival, looking remarkably unchanged, for the premier of a documentary about her life.

GRACE JONES PULLS UP TO THE BUMPER

Anyone who loves fashion will be knocked out by Grace Jones’ visual aesthetics on her current concert tour. Besides all the great songs, Grace puts on a fashion show of around a dozen costume changes and each revelation is more remarkable than the last. The person responsible for these avant-garde creations is visual artist Eiko Ishioka from Tokyo, a brilliant and award winning costume designer. You get MORE than your money’s worth with this concert, so if Grace comes to your town, try to see her. She might even show up on time.
