Golden Globes

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

THERE’s plenty to LIKE about this moment on The Golden Globes telecast. First of all, the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association- Meher Tatna- was introduced, and – hooray- she’s a WOMAN. Meher announced that the HFPA was donating two million dollars in grants to support investigative journalism- good news. What was WRONG was Meher’s bright red outfit. Apparently she didn’t support the women of the Time’s Up movement, who wore black on the red carpet. When questioned later, unconcerned Meher insisted “in her country” you didn’t wear black to a celebration and her mother expected her to wear color. Lame excuse. There are many online photos of Meher at other festive social events WEARING BLACK. Naturally her red outfit made her stand out – it appeared she wanted attention – like several wannabe starlets at the event who pulled the same trick.

KIRK DOUGLAS ON THE GOLDEN GLOBES: MOST DEPRESSING LIVE MOMENT IN TV HISTORY?

Who’s bright idea was it to invite a 101 year old stroke victim in a wheelchair to appear on The Golden Globes? Granted, Kirk Douglas was a big boxoffice star in the 50’s and 60’s and he did deserve recognition for that, however he would have been better served if his daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones had appeared alone and presented clips of Kirk in his famous roles. Not only did poor Kirk look awful, but he cannot speak clearly. It was an unnecessarily sad and disturbing segment of the show. Also, one cannot ignore the fact that Kirk had an unfortunate history with women – in the past he was kindly described as a “womanizer” and has been accused of raping a teenage Natalie Wood.

HOLLYWOOD HAS CHOSEN SIDES -THEY’RE TEAM BRAD

Naturally we were floored by Meryl Streep’s heartfelt support of the press at the Golden Globes last night, but there was another even more poignant moment. Unannounced, Moonlight producer Brad Pitt suddenly walked onstage and time stood still. The startled audience recovered quickly and applauded like there was no tomorrow. Brad’s face changed – he was visibly surprised and TOUCHED by the obvious support from his colleagues. (And he happened to look great!) At that moment, Hollywood chose sides. Beloved good guy Brad has been suffering through a traumatic divorce (and embarrassing accusations) and his audience wanted him to know they still love him. Insiders say Hollywood doors are not so likely to swing open for Angelina Jolie any more. She is no longer “magic.” Maybe it’s a good thing she aspires to a political career.

ANGELINA JOLIE’S “UNBROKEN” IS COMPELLING AND TOUCHING

AG019003_12ang

Don’t let the fact that the Golden Globes ignored Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” stop you from seeing it. We were pleasantly surprised to see that Angie has sensitively and masterfully directed a very special – and patriotic – WWII movie. The story of this heroic man’s life is amazing and we love the fact that she cast not-so-familiar faces so the story seemed even more down to earth and real. What a relief it is NOT to have the distraction of a big Hollywood name making the film all about himself! According to the NY Post’s Andrea Peyser, Hollywood doesn’t like patriotic movies like Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” and this one. Do you suppose that’s true? JULIANA MARGULIES: THIS FASHION CRIME WASN’T WORTH THE RISK

julianna_margulies_#17FEcut

We had to laugh at the backstage drama caused by Juliana Margulies’ Golden Globes dress. According to the Hollywood Reporter, her gown was shipped to LA from a New York tailor but was lost or stolen by the tailor’s messenger service. The designer managed to whip up a duplicate days before the awards, but we think whoever stole the dress but have been awfully disappointed! If you’re going to take the risk of stealing – one would hope to get a glamorous gown. This one is black and stiff and has very limited appeal. Not worth going to jail for.

LADY GAGA: LIVING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE

Lady Gaga has been enduring rumors that her career is kaput, but she put on a happy face for the Golden Globes and her boyfriend Taylor Kinney, who was a presenter at the show. For the party after, Gaga dolled herself up in full starlet drag for the amusement of her handsome boyfriend. And SHE went home with the biggest prize of the night..

JACQUELINE BISSET: BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE

After Jacqueline Bisset was announced as winner for Best Supporting Actress in a TV miniseries (“Dancing on the Edge”) she took the looongest walk in history (and unsteady) to the podium to accept. Obviously overcome and flustered, she proceeded to make quite a fool of herself. We’ve always been fond of Jacqueline as a person and an actress, and we can’t help but wonder WHAT she ingested before the show that scrambled her brain to that extent. It DID provide, however, a memorable moment for a dull show.

LENA DUNHAM: WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

LenaDunhamIDcut
We’re big fans of Lena Dunham’s talent, but NOT her fashion sense at this year’s Globes. Who on earth talked her into wearing this Zac Posen classic bombshell dress when she has none of the bombshell necessities? Sofia Vergara would do justice to this fishtail gown, but Lena looks ridiculous. The “Girls” creator should have chosen a funkier downtown look – something hipper, younger, and less pretentious. The undone hair and tattoos just don’t add up to gamour. (Photo above from ID magazine has nothing to do with Lena’s Globes outfit- find that elsewhere)

WOODY ALLEN’S OLD GIRLFRIEND DIANE KEATON DOESN’T MIND ACCEPTING HIS GOLDEN GLOBES AWARD

woody-allen-diane-k#17cut

Sunday’s Golden Globes show will go on without the presence of Woody Allen, who is being honored with the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to give it to Woody even though he won’t be picking it up in person. Woody dislikes award shows (he didn’t even accept his four Oscars in person) and intended to turn down the award altogether but was persuaded that it might have a negative affect on his excellent movie “Blue Jasmine.” “Annie Hall” star Diane Keaton (above) agreed to accept for Woody and that made the HFPA happy. Woody admits he avoids reading any and all comments about his films and himself. He told the LA Times “I realized the less preoccupied you are with yourself, the better you do.”
