SARAH PALIN: A GIANT STEP FOR WOMANKIND

palin.jpg
Sarah Palin’s name was announced as John McCain’s running mate, we sense a deliriously heightened air of political excitement and the feeling that democrats are scrambling to respond to this news carefully. It is HUGELY gratifying to finally have a female candidate, but we do wish she were more moderate – especially socially. Whether she’s the perfect candidate or not, she IS a woman and she represents a long overdue step toward “equality” that American women have been denied for so long. Don’t underestimate this political maneuver- it is a giant step for womankind.

  1. Guess what I do? LAUGH!

Remember,”He who laughs last.Laughs the hardest”
    McCain/Palin

  2. I want paling and baby triggs to undergo a maternity test, she is not the mother, I dont care who is pregnant now, that is not her biological baby, wake up america, we need a maternity test and flush this liar out of our radar. what a pathetic woman. and for all of the people discussing pressing one for english, there are plenty of other people in this country non spanish speaking that dont speak english, go to any china town, korea town, phillipino town, little tokyo, where you will find plenty of non english speaking ppl that are from the east. you just want to pick on hispanics because their skin tone is least like yours. there is plenty of racism in this country, cloaked and otherwise

  3. English? that goes for ALL nationalities. If I wanted to live in France I would move there too – got it? .Just to clarify.

  4. THANK YOU 3:13. I AM 100% WITH YOU! THESE PEOPLE DON’T GET THE VALUE OF OUR MILITARY. GO MCCAIN!

  5. What a uneducated idiot. Now I know why Janet Charlton writes a celebrity blog instead of being a ligitimate journalist. Ever heard of Geraldine Ferraro, Janet?

  6. I want paling and baby triggs to undergo a maternity test
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Only after YOU get a drug test.
After what you just wrote you have to
    be high as a kite!

  7. you know that is not her baby
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It is her baby. Now go ahead and take another
    toke. lol

  8. OMG John McCain is truly a hero – the Rep convention has TRUE substance. He will make an excellent president. A true Patriot. If ANYONE understands the complexities of war – the good and the bad – it is him. He has true character. His sons are in the military – he will be doing what is best for this nation. Obama can keep his free love speak. I want a REAL patriot running this country.

  9. Bring it on. McCain will crush Obama in the debates. I can’t wait!!! Obama needs a teleprompter – McCain KNOWS what the issues are and the debates will prove it.

  10. “I don’t want foreigners taking over America – ”
Naive comment of the week, following Janet’s statement about this “breakthrough” by Palin.
Thanks to all the borrowing the past eight years in order to finance our wars, we owe millions (make that trillions) and who do we owe it to? The Chinese. They bankroll us, pure and simple, and if they ever want us to pay up–well, let’s hope we never reach that day because we don’t have it. We don’t challenge their misuse of human rights because they’re our bank. Why do you think we were at the Olympics when some protested?
Have you ever looked at our products lately to see that foreigners have taken them over? Where are our goods manufactured? Want to buy an American car? Most people don’t if they can find one. With NFTA, most of our products are made somewhere else. Steadily, steadily, we are a debtor rather than a lender nation and it’s to foreigners. No wonder they want to come over here and spend their money: the dollar is worth so little.
And don’t the Saudis get special treatment? Bush certainly has provided it.
We have sold ourselves down to the river to foreigners under the Republicans and now you don’t want a Democrat in the White House? Get real, get informed. When someone wants to win, the other guy is labeled a “foreigner” but believe me, these red blooded cowboys have let us be taken over. We need someone to bring our country back and it’s not four more years of the same party.

  11. The debates will tell. McCain is NOT the “same”. I am informed more than you realize.

  12. mccain couldn’t even go on larry king to defend his position. not all but the majority of white people may bot be racist but most of them will be damned if there is ever a black president. that is what noone wants to come out right and say.
the gop convention was full of white ppl and a few token blacks they are probably the ones in your HR dept at work kept around to fire other minorities so it doesn’t look racially motivated. lol and just because you don’t vote for barack doesn’t make you racist. but we all know this election has its roots in american racism that is about to be exposed.
God help us. sarah palin is not equipped to lick baracks boots she has zero foreign policy experience she is not pro american she was trying to separate alaska from america and she certainly has typical white trash values I don’t mind having a white as president but I certainly don’t want a non polished white trash in high political office.

  13. McCain proved HE is the change candidate by nominating Palin as his VP choice. I actually met Gov. Palin this last May at the gas pipeline meetings held in Anchorage, Alaska. Palin gave the kickoff speech and was well versed in the meeting agenda. Also, she was very poised, gracious and was the consummate professional in answering the numerous State of Alaka politicians questions. I think she’ll “hit it out of the park” at tonight’s convention speech and she’ll bring this presidential race to a whole new level. Go McCain / Palin and “Yea USA!”

  14. “Bring it on. McCain will crush Obama in the debates. I can’t wait!!! Obama needs a teleprompter – McCain KNOWS what the issues are and the debates will prove it.”
In between McCain’s spittering and sputtering? He doesn’t know the difference between Shiites and Sunnis, (but then YOU probably don’t either) doesn’t know Checkoslovakia hasn’t been a country in twenty years. Hell, he doesn’t even know how many houses he owns. Gramps will probably fall asleep in the debates. I can’t wait!!!

  15. 1:42 you are a SHEEP. you got those “facts” from one minute TV commercials. You dummy. He knows how many homes he has etc… and also. Whites have no problem with having a woman or a black person in office. So quit kidding yourself on that one. They just don’t want HIM – a muslim, fast talking blow hard. Colin Powel? Sure. Conda – absolutely, a smug rock star smooth talker with no real credentials? No. the good news is if OHB did get into office people like YOU will finally have to quit your “white man is holding me down “- DATED rhetoric. It is 2008 and guess what? Not everything in life revolves around skin color. Character is ALL that matters. I want a capable president in the house – apparently you just want a black man – ANY black man in there and black is your only prerequsite. So who is the racist here? I rest my case.

  16. 3:53 no need to tell you, you must know you are an idiot. what case. you’re a mental case, its not just any black man if that were the case we would have taken jesse jackson years ago, you probably want any white man as long as he isnt black or part black.

  17. Did you even READ the post? “Not everything in life revolves around skin color”
4:58 – you are clueless. you MAY try re-reading the above (3:53) post again. It is obvious that YOU want to make everything about skin color and race. CHARACTER; Look it up in the dictionary. You may just actually start living your life by THAT and not how light or dark someone is. I said YOU – BTW – not everyone – so there you go again – making YOU about everyone. oy vey!

  18. Real women can do ANY the following and still be REAL women:
    1) Have children
    2) Have careers
    3) Shoot guns
    4) Camp, hunt and fish
    5) Dress in pants, skirts, dresses and longjohns
    6) Support pro-life AND/OR pro-choice
    7) Cut the lawn, take out the garbage
    8) Fix a car, fix a computer
    9) Negotiate, multi-task, communicate
    10) and disagree with OTHER women.
This may come as a surprise to MANY of you, but other countries have been voting in both women and people of different skin colours into high ranking government positions for quite a while now. Perhaps it is finally time the US caught up.

  19. Palin: wrong woman, wrong message
Sarah Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Hillary Clinton. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
    By Gloria Steinem
    September 4, 2008
Here’s the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing — the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party — are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women — and to many men too — who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the “white-male-only” sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes.
But here is even better news: It won’t work. This isn’t the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It’s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It’s about baking a new pie.
Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton’s candidacy stood for — and that Barack Obama’s still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, “Somebody stole my shoes, so I’ll amputate my legs.”
This is not to beat up on Palin. I defend her right to be wrong, even on issues that matter most to me. I regret that people say she can’t do the job because she has children in need of care, especially if they wouldn’t say the same about a father. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden’s 37 years’ experience.
Palin has been honest about what she doesn’t know. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, “I still can’t answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?” When asked about Iraq, she said, “I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq.”
She was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular, and she’s won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a $1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain’s campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax. Perhaps McCain has opposed affirmative action for so long that he doesn’t know it’s about inviting more people to meet standards, not lowering them. Or perhaps McCain is following the Bush administration habit, as in the Justice Department, of putting a job candidate’s views on “God, guns and gays” ahead of competence. The difference is that McCain is filling a job one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency.
So let’s be clear: The culprit is John McCain. He may have chosen Palin out of change-envy, or a belief that women can’t tell the difference between form and content, but the main motive was to please right-wing ideologues; the same ones who nixed anyone who is now or ever has been a supporter of reproductive freedom. If that were not the case, McCain could have chosen a woman who knows what a vice president does and who has thought about Iraq; someone like Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine. McCain could have taken a baby step away from right-wing patriarchs who determine his actions, right down to opposing the Violence Against Women Act.
Palin’s value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women’s wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves “abstinence-only” programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers’ millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn’t spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
I don’t doubt her sincerity. As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assn., she doesn’t just support killing animals from helicopters, she does it herself. She doesn’t just talk about increasing the use of fossil fuels but puts a coal-burning power plant in her own small town. She doesn’t just echo McCain’s pledge to criminalize abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade, she says that if one of her daughters were impregnated by rape or incest, she should bear the child. She not only opposes reproductive freedom as a human right but implies that it dictates abortion, without saying that it also protects the right to have a child.
So far, the major new McCain supporter that Palin has attracted is James Dobson of Focus on the Family. Of course, for Dobson, “women are merely waiting for their husbands to assume leadership,” so he may be voting for Palin’s husband.
Being a hope-a-holic, however, I can see two long-term bipartisan gains from this contest.
Republicans may learn they can’t appeal to right-wing patriarchs and most women at the same time. A loss in November could cause the centrist majority of Republicans to take back their party, which was the first to support the Equal Rights Amendment and should be the last to want to invite government into the wombs of women.
And American women, who suffer more because of having two full-time jobs than from any other single injustice, finally have support on a national stage from male leaders who know that women can’t be equal outside the home until men are equal in it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are campaigning on their belief that men should be, can be and want to be at home for their children.
    This could be huge.
Gloria Steinem is an author, feminist organizer and co-founder of the Women’s Media Center. She supported Hillary Clinton and is now supporting Barack Obama

  20. A giant step for womankind?? This is someone who wants to take the privacy of the most personal descicions of all that a woman has to make!!! She sat there and said about how she would make her own daughter have her baby if she were raped! She’s so pro like she doesn’t have a problem sitting her kids down on an innocent dead and bloodied moose. She’s an ignorant redneck, and you can guarantee more secrets are going to leak out.

  21. Has it occurred to you in the midst of Hollywood gossip (Sharon Osbourne to play Sarah Palin’s mother?)that this woman could be president this term? Ooh, let’s forget about the fact that she’s a woman when she doesn’t know Fannie Mae from Freddie Mac. Does being a woman mean she’s immune from questioning about what she does know and has done? Oooh, the big bad press is going to hurt Sarah. She can’t stand the scrutiny given to other candidates (the right of the people to know) because she’s a woman?
Funny, that to me is sexism. Listen (not look and be distracted) to a tape of her speaking on national and foreign affairs in front of her church audience without a script. She is aggressively stupid because she doesn’t know that she doesn’t know things or what she doesn’t know. Therefore she thinks she knows everything. She makes W look like a Rhodes scholar. (oh, was that a man hating comment?)
We’re electing McCain, a 73-77 president who has beaten the odds already by surviving his POW status and three bouts of melanoma. Are you comfortable for her to take the helm?
I love this country and I want a leader, not the flavor of the week in the glasses of the week.
When national politics gets beyond treating the election as if we were voting for student council president or prom queen, maybe we’ll solve our terrible problems.
No Sarah Palin for President. Remember you heard the warning here first.
And Janet stick to Hollywood not political gossip.

  22. For God’s sake, take down her picture. When I googled to get on your site, that’s the first thing I saw. She’s a divisive influence in this country. While making well over 100,000 she has the nerve to label “Joe Six-Pack” and say she speaks for him. Let Joe Six Pack self-identify. Can you imagine the flack if Obama said he was the “Joe Sixpack” candidate–the charges of elitism?
We have McCain who promised us he’d pick an experienced, wise and informed person to be his VP, esp. because he’s a POW with a shorter life span predicted and suffers from melanoma, let alone that he’s 72 and would be 77 when his term finishes.
His pick of Palin, with her phony “you betcha” and other folksy language she never used in any Alaskan debates shows poor judgment.

  23. I love this country too and Obama is the worst disaster this country has EVER seen. Voting for him is the BIGGEST mistake anyone could make. Hilary Clinton backing Obama–the wife of a lying, woman chasing ex-pres–GIVE ME A BREAK!!
For those of you who think abstinence programs will increase sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted births and abortions–how stupid can you be?
Since when does knowing the difference between Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have anything to do with being a woman? Idiots.
Now wonder this country has issues. Stupid people like those who vote for Obama.
    Nuf said.
