SACHA BARON COHEN WILL ROCK YOU AS FREDDIE MERCURY

Hollywood has been trying for years to get a movie about Queen singer Freddie Mercury made and the last we heard, Johnny Depp was front-runner for the role. Johnny would have been great, but we’re delighted to hear that Sacha Baron Cohen has landed the role! Actually Cohen bears the closest resemblance to Mercury, who was of Indian descent, and born in Zanzibar. And Sacha looks good in spandex, too. Robert DeNiro is one of the producers finally getting this show on the road. The script covers the band’s early formative years up to the magnificent Queen performance for Live Aid in 1985. Freddie died tragically of AIDS in 1991 but his health decline won’t be part of the film – it will end on a high note. Paramount got the rights to the best Queen songs so this will also be a feast for the ears.

  1. The resemblance is absolutely startling, and I am sure that Cohen will do the role justice, but until I actually see the film I will think of Cohen doing Bruno or Borat impersonating Mercury.

  2. I respect Cohen after what he brought to his film with Depp “Sweeney Todd”. I just loved him in that film. So I am hoping he brings his triple A game to this project and does Freddie justice or they don’t do it. There’s no one like Freddie Mercury, so I think Cohen may just have a hard time pulling this one off and we may finally see if he can really ACT and not just be a stooge and embarrass people. I wonder what they plan on doing about the music tho. Hopefully Cohen will not butcher Freddie’s vocals, but I’m betting they use Freddie’s voice in all places possible. There’s just no one that has that kind of voice, no one. But can’t wait to see it!

  3. I would see this movie!!! I love Sacha and Freddie. I’ve watched a BBC special on Freddie, his upbringing in a private boys school, his wild parties and am happy to hear the movie ends happily.

  4. There is someone who very much sounds like Freddie, and has toured Worldwide with the Queen band. Just can’t recall his name.

  5. Hate Cohen, what an untalented, unfunny idiot he is, his films suck. But I think Freddie Mercury was overrated, too, don’t like Queen much, too gay sounding. I like basic American rock, not all fussy opera-sounding shit.

  6. I think Cohen is the perfect choice. I hope they do lip-synch and use the real music. I think he can pull it off. Can’t wait to see the movie!

  7. Natalie, I agree. I can understand how people can not like Cohen, but fail to see how they can label him an unfunny no-talent. I am not sure I would want to be his sibling or even neighbour, but I think he could do anything he wants, acting and film-making wise. He is our generations Jerry Lewis – not to everyone’s taste, for sure, but a genius.

  8. As a few people have already commented, I don’t like Cohen because of the way he humiliated a lot of good people (specifically, I’m thinking of the wonderful Jewish couple who took him in; I believe they lived in Pennsylvania) in BORAT — very mean-spirited and not funny. I wish him the best, but I will never see any of his films again.

  9. A couple of decades ago this would have been a great project. Now? SBC? Meh…

  10. Hey Barkley, man, what is “Gay sounding”? You mean to say you can actually tell how someone sings, thast they are gay? Wow, that’s some talent you got there! Maybe you could figure out how to make money off that “talent” of yours. And, oh, are you saying that “fussy opera-sounding shit” is only sung/played by gay people? What cave do you live in? Anywhere near a really tall, thin dude in a long long beard and white robes, (not Jesus returned)?

  11. Sebastian, I agree Cohen is very talented, if you haven’t caught him (and Depp) in Sweeny Todd, go check it out. They’re both great, and Cohen’s role was a standout! That was when he caught my eye, not in his fake-out movies, which I don’t care for. Too over the top silly. But, the dude CAN act in a good role with a well drawn charactor, so considering how developed Mercury was, and hopefully the writing will be, I’m sure Cohen will bring it!

  12. he died of AIDS too.
    LIKE ROCK HUDSON BEFORE HIM.

(celebrities just can’t controle their cocks)

  13. This willing be very interesting. Just another of the famous of our generation, wow have we been lucky to have seen this much real talent in our lifetime.

  14. Wouldn’t have thought of him for the role, but I think he will inhabit Freddie and channel him well. I don’t think he’ll ape his moves; at least I hope not, but he will bring the spirt of Freddie to film. And you all are forgetting about his great turn in Talledega Nights . . . the scene where he’s drinking a cafe au lait while racing round the track is hysterical.

  15. Did not think much of the Bruno movie over all, but one of the funniest things I ever saw was the scene where Bruno is wearing the pink body suit with fake genitals attached, and is concerned that the sunglasses he has will scream “LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!”

  16. This guy is an actor and a singer and young
, he perfect for Freddie Mercury’s seventies leotard days, and can even look like him with the moustache or without, WITHOUT ANY MAKEUP OR FALSE TEEETH.
his name is JEREMY KAPONE and not only does he look more like Freddie mercury than SACHA, HE COMES WITH THE ADDED BONUS OF BEING THE RIGHT HEIGHT, JUST AN INCH HALF TALLER THAN THE REAL DEAL.
    AND HE CAN ACT!

  17. At first, i thought Sacha can play the older Freddie and Jeremy the long haired younger one, until i discovered Jeremy could play both.
i think Jeremy Kapone should play both, because he could.
Sacha is fun for comedy but has shown no hint at all that he can seriously act, and the trouble is he doesnt look like freddie at all, and everyone will know it’s Borat, know its Sacha.
There is no way to make the film an anjoyable fiction -biopic with sacha in the role, because to enjoy any movie you have to believe in the characters, you have to be lulled into a suspension of disbelief in order to be drawn into a movie. Sacha will not achive it, and most importantly of all , he cannot truly dramatically act.
Sacha should therefore produce, with Kapone starring as Freddie and all my cast, especially the band i have found – because of Sacha’s passion and enthusiasm for queen and freddie i know he will want to make the best movie possible, and that is the way .

  18. you have to be lulled into a suspension of disbelief in order to be drawn into a movie. Sacha will not achive it, and most importantly of all , he cannot truly dramatically act.

This is even more true with a non fiction based biopic, where you are expecting an audience to believe you are the famous person or persons the biopic is about. Even great actors have trouble with keeping that real to an audience. take anthony Hopkins for instance, he is a great acotr but you knew it was him.
This should not be the goal, what you want it is to encapture the audience and really affectiveley transport them into the story you are telling, in such a way that they will believe they have met and lived alongside the life of your characters.
I believe Jeremey Kapone can do that as Freddie Mercury, truly i do, infact i know he can.
