JOHN WAYNE LONG BEFORE TRUE GRIT

True Grit is all over the place this week with the Coen brothers’ remake pulling in admirable boxoffice and numerous award nominations. In the 1969 original John Wayne played the cantankerous rooster Cogburn role and he won an Oscar. Wayne was in his 60’s then and had survived lung cancer surgery after confessing to a five pack a day habit. But once upon a time John Wayne was a handsome young actor and here’s the photo to prove it.

  1. I met Wayne in 74 on Vancouver Island. It was on his converted Canadian minesweeper The Wild Goose for a quick tour after he invited my Dad and I onboard to discuss fishing techniques for salmon. Our boat was alongside his parked in Sidney. He gave my dad a couple of shots of rum and I got a coke.
He was very interested in catching the big fish.
Too bad he had that weakness for the mexican girls. They soaked him bad.
    Nice man.

  2. I think only one was Mexican but all were Hispanic. He was America for many years.

  3. Oh Patrick how you disappoint. You have truly gone “strom” now, huh? Must be feeling mighty proud about now.

  4. Wayne was a beautiful strong specimen of a young man then, wasn’t he? He would be just as hot today and give the vampires a run for their money. Love the hands by the way. Much more masculine than those pasty thin fingered hands that triangle-head has. I can’t for a second understand what any female finds attractive about that guy.

I just would like to know what was behind that odd distinctive gait of Wayne’s. Has anybody ever researched it? Perhaps a badly healed broken leg or ankle?

  5. Reta, why? Why do you hurt me? I like you!
And Strom’s okay. He can have an opinion. Whether it suits your {stick it up your ass} P.C. mindset or not. No bullshit right to the point kinda guy.
And he doesn’t hysterically babble and wretch shrill. Like you.

  6. He certainly was a good looking guy. And I see what you mean about those hands, Reta.

  7. I meant to also add a thank you to Janet. I find these old photos to be interesting and its nice to see something different than the “celeb of the moment” grabbing coffee or pumping gas.

  8. Reta, seriously, every time you say “triangle head” which I know refers to Robert Pattinson, my funny bone gets really tickled.

  9. Reta re John Waynes gait. He didn’t like the way he walked naturally. It didn’t look like the other cowboys stride in his early dusters and so he turned to Harry Carrey who was his stunt double for advice. Harry told him to scrunch up his toes to the point of pain inside his cowboy boots.
Try it. It works. You’ll walk like John Wayne.
    You old bag of snakes.

  10. A True Movie Star and Celebrity Icon loved world wide. Never heard a bad word about him. He is of the same caliber as Jimmy Stewart in my books.

They definately don’t make em like they used to!!

  11. Poor poor Patty-Boy! You must have been sucking on a few sour snakes today. Perhaps if you try spitting out the venom instead of swallowing it, you’ll feel a bit more personable.

  12. Denise: yes, they are beautiful man hands and I’m sure were talented with all the wild ones, horsies, etc…rough tho they probably were…

  13. Am I the only one that thinks he looks GAY in that pic? Serious gay face.

  14. I don’t recall ever seeing that photo before. He looked handsome that’s for sure.

  15. I’m still stuck on the fact that he had a FIVE pack a day cig habit.

    DAMN. 100 cigs a DAY?

I’m surprised he lived as long as he did.

  16. Helena: I also am amazed at his obvious determination to get cancer (which he DID do). I don’t know how he actually crammed time into his day to eat, talk, sleep, let alone act, with the constant puffing he had to be doing. Seems like he must have been smoking 2-3-4-5 at once to get that many smoked in a day. 5 PACKS?!?!? Seems like a stunt for Guinness Book of Records!

  17. PS: some things just don’t make any sense, do they? Wayne lived a pretty good long life in spite of having at least one lung removed from cancer.

What is odd to me are the people like Christopher Rheeves’ wife who died young, after having never smoked, of lung cancer, fairly soon after losing her husband. Just TRY to figure that one out.

  18. Reta, that could be the grief that couldn’t be expressed, that came out as lung cancer, or maybe radon. Who knows.

  19. Bettye: whatever it is, it’s ridiculous. We try to listen to the educated and behave ourselves, and then we have polar opposite examples like these two showing us facts mean nothing. Too bad one can’t just relax and follow the script and get the sought for results.

  20. Wayne was bisexual too. Not that there would be smth wrong with that. Just hypocrisy. Him being America? Pls, it makes me sick. Many of his movies are nothing but propagandistic crap. If ud do some real research about him, u were surprised. In a bad way.

  21. XYZ: Just how do you come by your expert opinion on a long dead man’s sex life? How were you privy to this knowledge?
As for his movies and whether or not they were “propaganda”…DU-UH…he was an ACTOR. He did not WRITE, direct or most likely produce the pictures which have so offended you. It was his JOB to portray the characters he did, nothing more. That the public loved him and elevated him to mythic proportions was a side effect of the whole experience laid out before them, to which Wayne was a only a part in his acting role.

It always surprises me when people make these blatant statements about people they have never met and couldn’t possibly know anything about their private personal lives, but yet, here you are throwing shit against a dead man who was beloved by many many people, in a pathetic attempt to smear his name posthumously. I can only hope someone does you the same honor.

  22. XYZ: PS…how would Wayne’s being “bisexual” equate to hypocrisy? I don’t recall him ever making a movie or public statement against gays or bisexuals. You just throwing that out for fun?

  23. Wayne liked em 9 to 90.
Last man drinkin and dealin at night.
First man on the set in the morn.
    Jus the womens.

The last technique is the surgical t

  25. He did movies with Rock Hudson and Montgomery Cliff, both of who were fags. Never were they the best of friends but they all got on fine during the filming, That was in the days before GAY PARADES and flaunting it. Duke was also banging Marlene Dietrich who also went both ways.

Don’t think he would appreciate Rosie or Ellen’s style of wearing GAYNESS on the sleeve.
