We just walked out of “Inception” (Above, Marion Cotillard and Leonardo DiCaprio at the premier) and our brains are reeling from the profoundly loud and important sounding music as well as the over the top action and explosion scenes. We were hoping for some SCIENCE FICTION, but the plot is so far beyond believable that one must surrender all logic and follow the characters through multiple mind blowing but pointless adventures – all the way up to the awkward ending. There is no science in the movie and the fiction is so complicated that many viewers will undoubtedly refuse to admit they have no idea what’s going on. “Inception” is gorgeous to look at, and that might be enough for action fans in the audience. Opinions of this blockbuster are bound to be widely varying.
it’s all about problems with the GENITAL PARTS, folks!!
Janet, is it that bad??? Please do tell. Is it David Lynch-y in plot where you have to really think about what the hell is going on?
I have been waiting a while for this film. I can’t wait til Friday! I love the concept and was having Leo withdrawals since Shutter Island. Looking at the trailer anybody can say that this isn’t the usual feel-good, laugh-out-loud, kind of film. Nonetheless, I don’t mind complex plots.
As James Dyson (the inventor, and creator of the Dyson vacuum cleaner) says, we are getting into a kind of intellectual peril because of this obsession with fantasy and magic.
The real world, history, science, biology, geography, are fantastical enough, but they are real. However, people are choosing more and more to live in fake fantasy worlds, via the internet, video games, books, movies. And this is ruining peoples minds.
If one’s thinking is only rarely rooted in reality, one becomes a lazy and sloppy thinker because there are not real confines or restriction in which to work, with which to contend.
Imagination is not the B-all and end-all, structured thought is.
SebastianCanada, during these rough political, economical times people seek escapism that doesn’t have to be mindless. It doesn’t make them less of a person.
Christopher Nolan gives you that escape. His movies are really thought-provoking without being nonsensical. Have you seen Memento??? That movie is intellectually provocative and even though it’s now an older film, the concept is still unique and engaging.
In jest, I see and read enough news. I’m pursuing a master’s degree in public health and am boggled with facts and statistics. I’ve worked for a while in the hospital and have seen enough reality and sadness that sometimes imagination is quite therapuetic.
Sally, I agree that escapism can be a good thing, particularly in tough times. However, an excessive diet of escapism is worrying. If all forms of art, high or pop, that a child is exposed to are fantasy, can this be a good thing?
Art should offer some escapism, but it should also be didactic – it should portray the world as it is, and offer options to solve real-world problems. If children are raised on a diet of fantasy, they will not be equipped to deal with the pettiness and boredom of real life.
Fran Leibowitz made this comment in the 70’s, at the peak of popularity of shows like Sesame Street and The Electric Company: If a child thinks that saying “R. Red. Rooster.” will result in a giant red rooster appearing in the room and dancing a jig, he will grow up to be a very disappointed adult.
sebastincanada, FU. this is a gossip site for crying out loud. take your dissertation elsewhere. and i don’t care in all of your self-righteousness, if you don’t like it.
you and reta should marry!
Damn! I haven’t even commented on this post and you’ve got me married off already..FU! Hahahahahahahahaha…gotta LOVE that name too of course I ALWAYS love a good old fashioned effing! Don’t you Sebastian? Or I guess in this case we could call it a FINGERING!
PS: I agree with BOTH of you Sally and Sebastian. Escapism IS a welcome thing for many in these days of war, oil spills, job losses, and just general fucked-upness that goes on around the world year after year.
But as I often say to people I know who drink too much or smoke too much pot “I kinda dig reality, you know?” And being a poet I tend to appreciate the real things as they are, good OR bad, it’s all fuel for thought.
Can I be the guest at the wedding?
HaHaHa! That is a funny thread.
I like Marion and thinks she a smoking hot piece of ass and good actress. Don’t care much for Leo.
I wanna see this movie…well, I think I wanna see it…do I wanna see it? i’m not sure anymore…I mean, it looks pretty, but if its going to be hard to follow, I will get bored. I don’t mind things being silly for fun’s sake (The Matrix was great), but I prefer a storyline I can follow and get into. When the law of reality starts to shift and you can’t trust the characters or script, I will get cynical. Hmmm…I dunno…maybe Despicable Me will take my $10 instead…
What I do is take them apart and find the holes in them, and it really bugs me when they try to pass off a movie that is full of holes and expect the audience to be so stupid that we won’t notice or say anything about it. They have to have some common sense about it first and foremost or it just won’t work.
Oh, and Sally, how bout you be the preacher?? But, of course Sebastian is running down the beach with his hair on fire at this very moment and I haven’t the energy to chase him, so unless he comes back on his own, I guess the whole deal is off, eh?
You guys, I saw Inception last night and it was AWESOME!!!!!! It’s visually beautiful. It’s def Sci-fy, but you feel like your in a dream-like state. Loves it.
Christopher Nolan is a genius. It’s brilliant, disturbing, and very very smart. Maybe too smart for some. It’s def a movie that will get you to think. So it really depends on whether you like these kinds of movies or not.
P.S. Clementine, I can’t really compare this gem of a film, but if I had to it’s a cross between the Matrix, the Usual Suspects, and the Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind. It does defy logic, but it’s presented in a way to where it could be a possibility. The thought of anyone wanting to make it a possibility is disturbing.
Ellen Page has not been mentioned once in this post or the comments. Is her role in this movie the first move toward her becoming a second fiddle, or worse, walking scenery, because she is not Hollywood beautiful? What a shame.
No Sebastian, Ellen isn’t playing second fiddle, she’s so good in this role. Very good role for her and, no, she’s not overshadowed at all by the other actors. It’s well casted and well acted that’s for sure. Marion’s role is a juicy one.
Sally, sounds good, you talked me into it. I love a movie that makes me use my head (or LETS me rather). Ellen Paige is a real doll and I think will always have a very successful career. She’ll always play charactors and not be relegated to just the “pretty girl” roles that are bland, brainless and boring. Marion stole the show along with Penelope in Nine, so I look forward to her again in this one. Sounds like a good date this weekend!
Reta, I thought we were getting MARRIED this weekend!!!!
Sebastian watching and figuring out this movie is far more important at this time. You have to wait til next weekend:)
Most movie plots are reviewed clearly on
Themoviespoiler.com. Beware they spoil the movie by telling ya all the facts and ending.
Here ya go..
Complicated? They literally GAVE you a road map during the movie. There are going to be 3 layers of dreams. 3. And then each layer was a different place to keep from being confusing. And then there was the sidebar/side note of the Cobb character. Everything looped around to a tidy end just like peeling an onion. The ending was exactly as expected – unknown conclusion to Cobb, so you are left to your own imagination. It COULD have been complicated, but Hollywood figured everyone would be to dumb to follow it if not given the premises of the plot.
oops, delete delete delete the ending of my previous statement.
SPOILER sorry folks.
Loved it! I saw this movie Saturday and loved it.
I didn’t like the movie. I think it’s so overrated.
Leo is starting to look very old, which makes me sad. I remember when I used to be in love with him doing the Titantic days.
It is really very great movie to watch. Sebastian is doing great job in this movie.

That movie is really confusing and I REALLY DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT EVERY ONE WAS SHOTTING FOR? I love leo and he is cute as hell and really sexy hot blond and I did not like the movie but I Really liked him and find him very attractive in every movie he has made and of course I keep going because I really like the way he looks and would love to meet him but only in my dreams and I Know that he is total pack and this movie is some what stupid and dumb but there is some understanding but not worth seeing again, Unless they fix the movie? But I don’t like it.
