HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW

The Southern California Wildfires are the only story worthy of recapping this week, and while there will surely be months (if not years) of future stories on this disaster to report, here’s what we know now about this incredibly heartbreaking tragedy.

Henry “The Fonz” Winkler took a beating online for suggesting the fires could have been started by an arsonist. Instead of backing down, he’s doubling down and spearheading an effort among his moneyed neighbors to hire private investigators to figure out what caused these fires. Despite leaning liberal, Henry isn’t viewing this from a political lens, and his common sense approach is winning over a lot of people despite the online backlash. Many neighbors have agreed to contribute to get to the bottom of what STARTED this fire.

Billionaire developer and one time Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rick Caruso has been quite vocal about casting blame on the city and the candidate who defeated him, LA Mayor Karen Bass – we just heard this. Rick is gearing up to finance a recall campaign (they’re quite expensive) to eject Karen from office, and then he plans to run in the special election to replace her. Hard to believe, but my well placed source says that the wheels of motion are already secretly spinning and the effort will be publicized after the last of the embers have been extinguished.

Speaking of politics, President-elect Donald Trump has been warned to put a diaper on his diarrhea of the mouth. No sooner did the fires break out that Trump started using immature nicknames for California Governor Newsom and making disparaging remarks about the area. My source says that Trump was warned to cool his rhetoric because although most of the affected areas of the fire skew liberal, some of his BIGGEST donors also reside there! Long story short, Trump was warned not to suggest he would withhold disaster relief from California, so for now he’s behaving.

Talented songwriter Diane Warren (she’s responsible for some of the movies’ most popular soundtracks) lost her beach home in the fires but the selfless animal lover is putting her own personal woes aside and focusing on the displaced animals. We just heard that Diane is pledging to donate $1million (or more) to make sure the all of the displaced animals will be safe in shelters until they’re reunited with their pet parents. My source says Diane has vowed to pick up the tab for emergency animal shelters, food and veterinary care.

Blast from the past Steve Guttenberg made headlines when a local news reporter interviewed him on camera and didn’t recognize him as an actor until deep into the chat. Steve came across sensible and articulate and now there’s a grassroots effort to get him to run for a local office. My source connected to Steve reveals that the Three Men and a Baby star is flattered and has agreed to consider the idea once things in his community calm down.

We previously told you how Jennifer Garner was collecting donations among her celebrity pals to make sure her less fortunate neighbors had proper shelter while they’re displaced. Well we just heard her goals have expanded and now she’s also raising funds to make sure some of the area’s mom and pop landmarks, like Moonshadows Restaurant and The Reel Inn have the proper funding to rebuild. She’s also leaning on Capital One (she has starred in many of their TV and print ads) to make a sizable donation to her latest cause).

Melissa Rivers lost her home in the fires and made the news for revealing she saved her mom, the late great Joan Rivers’ only Emmy Award which she won for her daytime talk show, “The Joan Rivers Show” in 1990. (We used to love gossiping on her show) We just heard that Melissa was rummaging through some of the items she managed to escape with and found a hummingbird broach that belonged to her mom inside of a jacket she grabbed. Melissa told a pal that she hasn’t worn that particular jacket in years and still isn’t sure why she grabbed it, but is taking it as a sign from her mom that everything will be fine.

On that note, we certainly hope so. Our beloved Los Angeles is suffering like it hasn’t in decades (or maybe ever) but we have confidence it will come back bigger and brighter.

MATTHEW PERRY HAD MORE FRIENDS THAN HE REALIZED

Hollywood is working overtime trying to figure out the best way to honor the late Matthew Perry. My source reveals the current plan is to petition to get Matthew a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – two of his Friends costars, (Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston ) have already been honored. In addition, there’s talk of bestowing upon him a posthumous honorary Emmy – he was nominated 4 times but never won. Finally, HBO and their streaming service MAX are hoping to get his remaining Friends costars to film an hour long special. My source says that one is the most complicated, because his former cast mates DO want to honor his legacy, but it’s just too soon for them to decide exactly HOW.

MARGARET QUALLEY WORKED HER WAY UP

Nice to see that Margaret Qualley, 27, got an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her Netflix drama Maid. She’s one of those rare children of Hollywood stars (her mother is Andie MacDowell) who find second generation success in Hollywood. (It didn’t hurt that she inherited her mother’s model looks.) When she was promoting her 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Margaret showed up at my house for a photoshoot with director Quentin Tarantino for W Magazine’s Director’s Issue. It was right before Covid started! Margaret was here all day changing outfits and hair while being photographed in just about every room in the house. Once Upon a Time took place in 1969 so the location was appropriate. She was happy and delightful all day and she aimed to please. It paid off!

BEST DRESSED EMMA CORRIN – PRINCESS DIANA WOULD HAVE AGREED

Our absolute FAVORITE outfit at The Emmys. We had never heard of 25 year old actress Emma Corrin before last night – turns out, she played Princess Diana in season 4 of The Crown. THIS is a modern woman not afraid to look different. First of all, please note her simple non-aggressive makeup. She looks natural and pretty – the polar opposite of a Kardashian. The simplicity of her Miu Miu dress is startling – no plunging neckline, no glitter, no provocative slits up to the hip. Just a beautiful futuristic silhouette, with a matching headpiece and gloves. We could live without the black nails, but they do add whimsy…

BEST DRESSED AT THE EMMYS: DAN LEVY

Designer Thom Browne must be delighted today because multiple Emmy winner Daniel Levy of Schitt’s Creek was the talk of the Emmys, thanks to his kilt suit. Not many men could pull off this look as well as Levy did. He was head to toe – including socks and boots, in Thom Browne, and the suit almost overshadowed his Emmy wins. No female attire at the event came CLOSE to causing as much conversation as Levy’s kilt. The kilt got a lot of airtime because Levy won an astonishing THREE Emmys – Best Supporting Actor, Best Comedy Series Writer, and Best Comedy Series Director for Schitt’s Creek. The show racked up nine awards total and set a new record. The kilt should have gotten one too.

BRAD AND JEN AT THE EMMYS AGAIN

Certain people were thrilled to hear that both Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were nominated for Emmys this year. It WAS a surpise when Brad was nominated for his guest appearance on SNL playing Dr Anthony Fauci. (It also fulfilled Fauci’s wish that Brad would play him) Brad is in a tough category – Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Among his competitors are Adam Driver and Eddie Murphy – both for SNL also. Jennifer Aniston got her first dramatic Emmy nomination for The Morning Show so she must be delighted. Keep in mind, Brad and Jen still have those die-hard fans hoping they will get back together. They won’t, although Brad and Jen ARE friends now- they still create excitement whenever they are in the same room …

BEST EMMY COUPLE: SCARLETT JOHANSSON AND COLIN JOST

Okay, we have to admit we love seeing Scarlett Johansson, 33, and Colin Jost, 36, as a couple. Scarlett has, indeed, made a few mistakes man-wise through the years. Her two year marriage to Ryan Reynolds was short and sweet, but he’s always seemed like a nice guy. Scarlett’s biggest mistake was 24 years older Sean Penn. He had her mesmerized for awhile, but luckily she wised up and moved on. Colin is smart (a Harvard grad) – he edited his school papers and got his writing job at SNL right after he graduated. And they LOOK right together (he always looks like he died and went to heaven!)

EMMY NOMINEE SANDRA OH GOT HER JUST DESSERTS – AND IT’S ABOUT TIME!

SO happy to see Sandra Oh become the first Asian woman to get an Emmy nomination for Leading Actress in Killing Eve! It so happens that the Killing Eve BBC series is a female led project with an amazing script about two women for a change – the men are all secondary characters. It’s interesting to note that Sandra said her character was NOT written for an Asian female – just a woman- and she was surprised to be invited to audition. Sandra pointed out how that NEVER happens – her ethnicity had always limited the roles she could audition for – thanks mostly to white men, of course. Our only Emmy complaint is that the brilliant Jodie Comer from Killing Eve (above, left) was not nominated – when you watch the series, you’ll see what we mean…

MILLIE BOBBY BROWN IS NO STRANGER TO SUCCESS

Thirteen can be an incredibly awkward age – but you’d never know it with Stanger Things nominee Millie Bobby Brown at the Emmys. She is sailing through the geeky self-conscious years with flying colors. Easily one of the Best Dressed at the award show, Millie wore a ballerina inspired pouffy dress that is simple and sweet. It’s not surprising that’s she’s signed with a modeling agency already. Millie is currently filming her first feature – Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Not bad for thirteen.
