BRADLEY COOPER WILL NEVER LET YOU SEE HIM WITHOUT HAIR

Bradley Cooper is thinking ahead. He’s paying close attention to his slightly receding hairline and the thickness of his hair. He wants to retain his leading man appeal as long as possible and fears he’s inherited male pattern baldness from his family. He’s been using Propecia for years and he’s always researching new hair treatments. (Some of his hair in American Hustle was not all his) Bradley has a personal hair stylist who helps him look his best. If he ever needs augmentation, Bradley plans to do it gradually, and BEFORE anyone notices that he needs it.

AMERICAN HUSTLE DESERVES AN OSCAR FOR HAIRSTYLING

One of the things we liked best about American Hustle was the HAIR. In particular, the men’s 1970’s hair. Christian Bale’s character’s comb-over was an instant classic and gave the movie its hilarious opening scene. Jeremy Renner’s pompadour was perfect for his smarmy mayor character. And who can forget Bradley Cooper’s headful of perm curlers? The women’s hair was also great, but in this case men’s hair dominated the movie and made it funnier. Kathrine Gordon was the head hair stylist responsible for the magnificent coiffures and of course, she SHOULD get an Oscar for it but probably won’t. Why? Because the sometimes backward Academy gives ONE award for ”Best Makeup and Hairstyling.” Imagine combining the two very separate skills! Consequently the award usually goes to someone who does prosthetic makeup for a fantasy movie. It’s a shame that hair people aren’t appreciated like they should be.

WHO PLAYS FAT AND BALD BETTER – TOM CRUISE OR CHRISTIAN BALE?

Tom Cruise DID play a fat, balding Jewish studio executive named Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder long before Christian Bale assumed the role of the eerily similar Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle. Five years ago, in fact. Tom’s character Les was exceedingly vulgar, and besides wearing a fat suit and bald cap, Cruise had chest hair glued under the gold chains revealed by his unbuttoned shirt. Christian actually GAINED the extra weight and shaved his own hair for the comb-over. He went the extra mile because he had the leading role in HIS movie and Cruise’s part was a cameo. But the transformation brought them both a lot of favorable attention so they made smart choices.

CHRISTIAN BALE ISN’T KIDDING ABOUT GETTING INTO CHARACTER

Having recently seen Christian Bale looking gaunt in “Out of the Furnace,” we were floored by this photo of him in his soon to be released movie “American Hustle.” In two months he ate enough cheeseburgers to gain forty pounds. That, and shaving off his hair into a greasy comb-over, turned him into a very unappealing 1970’s con-man. Ever since Robert De Niro gained all that weight to play Jake La Motta in “Raging Bull,” younger actors have been following in his footsteps, with visions of Oscars dancing in their heads. Somehow we can’t picture Brad Pitt ever doing that.
