Vintage movie fans might be interested to learn that Johnny Depp is set to star in a remake of “The Thin Man,” which starred William Powell and Myrna Loy as the smart and witty Nick and Nora Charles. The original movie spawned a popular series of films about the hard boiled detective who “retired” when he married an heiress, but the well dressed, cocktail swilling socialites couldn’t resist solving crimes together. With the help, of course, of their wire fox terrier, (and our favorite movie dog) Asta. Hopefully the new version will be as clever as the original.
Asta Johnny Depp Myrna Loy The Thin Man William Powell
This could be fun….who’s playing Myrna Loy’s role?
Sounds like good one! Johnny Depp will be awesome as usual.
Maybe Angelina should play Loy’s part so the two of them can redeem themselves from the Tourist? Personally I enjoyed the movie but lots of people didn’t.
Drew Barrymore has Nora would be my vote they would be great together.
The role of Nora (played superbly by Myrna Loy) will probably go to a Brit or Australian but I think Amy Adams could handle it beautifully.
I love The Thin Man movies. Amy Adams is good suggestion for the Myrna Loy role but I think Marion Cotillard would be great too. She even bears a resemblance to Myrna Loy.
I lost my faith in Johnny. Tourist is simply pathetic and made me look at him with a different set of eyes. The audience will now be tougher on him after that unfortunate flop.
Janet you are really showing your age with this post. Americans are only interested in reality tv rubbish.
Nooooooooooooooooooo! I love Johnny Depp in the right movie but he’s no William Powell. If they have to, why not Colin Firth or Jeremy Northam. They need someone suave, debonair and a lovely drunk.
As for Nora, Amy Adams is cute, showed some flair in Miss Pettigrew but can she be the very droll wisecracking yet tolerant Nora. Probably, more so than many others. I heard they mention Marissa Tomei, she’s to old and doesn’t have the chops.
There are more people on here than just Americans, Pippa.
Get over yourself, already.
I love the Thin Man movies…wow, old hollywood is so much more fun than today’s hollywood…by far…
I don’t know if this is a good idea. We thought the Tourist was horrible, boring, badly acted dreck. I hope I never see AJ & Depp together again. They had zero chemistry. I think its becuz their both oddballs. For really sexy chemistry, I don’t think you should put two oddballs together–better to have one oddball and one average but interesting/endearing person. Hope that makes sense.
Asta is my favorite movie dog also, and I grew up near Lassie and other movie/tv dogs and got to visit them.
Asta was killer cool for a dog! Nick & Nora were cool cool cool and suave, sleek, sexy, funny as hell, and always dressed to kill. Love Depp, but this isn’t good casting unless he is willing to TOTALLY transform himself, and even then, I don’t think so. Needs to be a taller guy, capable of wearing the tux like a second skin. And a classy dame with a sweet soft, slightly upturned at the corners mouth who can twist her husbands arm while watching a game and never become unsexy while doing so. The originals will be next to impossible to replace and if it can’t be done extremely well, the idea should be put in mothballs. There are only so many Nick and Nora’s in the entire world over 100 years and I don’t think our second pair have come around quite yet.
Who’s playing Asta???
Oy vey, what a suggestion! The Thin Man was perfect the first time. I agree with the Gene Siskel, who said why remake something that was just right, why not pick something that was screwed up?
Depp would be a poor choice. I doubt that he “gets” the character. Then some writer would have to “modernize” the script and completely ruin it. Better to leave the original for young people to see. It’s still fun to watch and my guess is that TCM gets a lot of viewers every time it is on.
sound really good to go back to old school.
JOHNNY DEPP HAS THE SPIRIT.
THANK GOODNESS FOR OLD SCHOOL AND SMOOTH ACTING AND SEXY APPLIES.
