THE ROLLING STONES : TIME CAPSULE

mariannecut.jpegWhile you were watching American Next Top Model Sunday night we happened upon a time capsule from the sixties- “The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus” on KCET, the PBS educational station in LA. What a treat! We had no knowledge of thIs hour TV special filmed in the UK in 1968. Apparently it never aired and sat on a shelf for thirty odd years because Mick Jagger felt his performance wasn’t up to snuff. Imagine the young and tender Stones, The Who, John Lennon (in his first performance without The Beatles) Eric Clapton, Jethro Tull, Yoko Ono, This was one of Brian Jones‘ last shows – he appeared bloated and seemed to be in a stupor. Eric Clapton looked young and -yeah – geeky. What broke our heart was Marianne Faithfull. She was the least publicized of the acts and startlingly beautiful, with a great voice and unlimited potential, but her song was soft and ladylike. In those days they didn’t know what to do with female rockers. We want her haircut.

  1. Poor Brian. He did look very much apart from the other Stones. But what about Taj Mahal’s performance – great song that. Marianne was just being Marianne.

  2. AS A KID I REMEMBER SEEING
    MARIANNE FAITHFUL ON ONE OF
THE TEEN TV SHOWS IN A VELVET
MINI DRESS WITH A WHITE LACE
    COLLAR…I WANTED TO LOOK JUST
    LIKE HER…PEOPLE FORGET HOW
    VERY LOVELY SHE WAS…THAT’S
WHAT DRUGS AND BOOZE DOES TO
    A PERSON…TALE A GOOD LOOK
    LINDSEY….

  3. I’ve had this on video for about 10 years, so I was surprised to see it on PBS yesterday! One of the reasons it was not released until many years after it was shot is because the Stones were upset that The Who kicked their ass performance wise. They were totally upstaged and didn’t want to let the public see how much they sucked compared to The Who (who ALWAYS put on an awesome show, even today).

  4. I’ve seen The Who and The Stones in the last six months. The Who were okay{new stuff} and good{old stuff}.
The Stones were a pathetic ripoff!
Neither can hold a candle to the Roger Waters(DSOTM) show on tour now!
Anyone who puts out for The Police or Genesis is also being ripped off!

  5. Hey Janet, Thanks for mentioning R&R Circus. I too saw it on PBS last week and totally enjoyed it. Yeah, Marianne was beautiful and doomed and The Who DID blow the Stones off the stage.

  6. I also saw it and to me, Brian was beautiful and took my breath away. I had forgotten how young we all were at one time and oh so pretty, even Yoko!

  7. Casonia logenberry..Enough about Hells kitchen this people don't even know I am alive? But A.B.C. TV is taking off One life to live and replacing it a show call The Chew and..I say Screw The Chew and leave my Roger Howarth alone. says:

Music is joy and fun and laughter all rolled into one and Music can be timeless and often moves to the future and passes to every one in this world..Who has emotions and thoughts but also the good times we had together and…History is part of music and it all brings us together in one form or another.
