THE ACADEMY NEEDED AN EXCUSE TO GET RID OF BRETT RATNER AND EDDIE MURPHY

There’s more to this Brett Ratner story than meets the eye. We don’t happen to be big fans of his, but we were shocked when he was caught saying “Rehearsal is for fags” and immediately forced to resign from producing the Oscars, despite the fact that he apologized profusely. Certainly, Ratner was 100% wrong, but women have been used in the same type of offhand negative insults for decades (“He runs like a GIRL”) with no backlash, much less loss of a job. There will always be ignorant men like Ratner, but an immediate and sincere apology should put an end to the matter. We suspect the Academy was getting nervous about hiring Ratner to produce the show when he insisted his buddy Eddie Murphy do the hosting. They wanted an excuse to get rid of Brett and the unpredictable Eddie along with him. The Academy got what they wanted AND they look like heroes to the gays.

GEORGE CLOONEY TO STACY KEIBLER: CUT BACK ON THE TWEETS!

Speaking of George Clooney, he has been pestering Stacy Keibler to stop tweeting anything remotely related to their relationship. Every once in awhile she tweets “I feel like a princess today” or something similarly vague, and it makes George uncomfortable. He doesn’t do Facebook or Twitter and would prefer that Stacy gave up tweeting altogether.

CHELSEA HANDLER AND ANDRE BALAZS’ DAYS WERE NUMBERED, ANYWAY

It’s no surprise that Chelsea Handler and her boyfriend hotel mogul Andre Balazs have gone their separate ways. Andre has a lot in common with George Clooney – he was married once, but prefers being single and socializing with the world’s most attractive women. And like George, he’s charming and generous and is considered a “great catch.” Uma Thurman dated him for a few years before she realized he was not marriage material. Chelsea, 36, dated Andre for almost a year so it was a long run but never had much of a future. We have a feeling they will sneakily get together a few more times before the split is final.

ASHLEY OLSEN IS PLANNING AN ACTING COMEBACK AS AMANDA KNOX

Ashley Olsen wants to resume her acting career and she’s set her sights on the Amanda Knox story. Ashley was mesmerized as Amanda’s arrest and imprisonment for murder, and retrial unfolded on the news and she’s trying to buy the rights to her story for herself. Her TV movie will be different from the Lifetime version starring Hayden Panettiere – it will be told from Amanda’s personal perspective as a young girl in trouble – not from a legal point of view.

Jack Black, 42, is losing control of his offspring. His little boy Sammy appears to have a mischievous edge like his comedian father. He was seen running away from daddy in Beverly Hills. Jack has been married to his wife Tanya since 2006, and they two sons – Sammy, 5, and Thomas, 3. Jack is about to start filming Charlie Kaufman’s “Frank or Francis” – a Hollywood satire.

MICHAEL VICK IS OFFICIALLY THE MOST DISLIKED PLAYER IN THE NFL – AND ELSEWHERE

If footballer Michael Vick, 31, thought it would be easy to get back in the public’s good graces after he served time for illegal dog fighting, he underestimated the memories of animal lovers. We haven’t forgotten those scarred and tortured dogs. Happily, Vick has been voted Most Disliked player in the NFL by sports fans. 60% of all NFL fans polled by Nielsen dislike Vick. To be exact – 70% of the women and 50% of the men named him least liked player. Public opinion has made Vick less likely to land any important endorsement deals – even Nike doesn’t use him as a pitchman. And that’s the way it should be.

ROBERT DENIRO WILL PLAY THE BIGGEST GANGSTER OF ALL TIME: BERNIE MADOFF

Robert DeNiro is following in Al Pacino’s footsteps straight to HBO, where he too will play a real life character. Pacino portrayed Dr Jack Kevorkian to considerable acclaim and his Phil Spector movie is highly anticipated. DeNiro, accustomed to playing gangsters, will step into the role of investment swindler Bernie Madoff. The script is being written based on the book “Truth and Consequences: Inside the Life of the Madoff Family.” Lately the Madoffs whining and complaining in interviews has been getting on everyone’s nerves.

SHOULD THE JACKSONS BE “OVERJOYED” BY THE MURRAY VERDICT?

Why Michael Jackson’s family feels so celebratory since Dr Murray was appropriately found guilty is puzzling – it’s not like he WANTED Michael to die. It reminds us of parents who lose a child to drugs – they desperately want someone else to BLAME because they can’t bear to admit their child destroyed himself. So they accuse the drug dealer of murder. In fact, their children, and Michael Jackson, would still be alive if they hadn’t been addicted to drugs. Period. Murray was the doctor who got caught – what about all the other doctors who gave Michael what he wanted? There’s a lot of malpractice here, but ultimately Michael was a more than willing victim. CLINT EASTWOOD HAS ANOTHER GOOD LOOKING OFFSPRING

At least two of Clint Eastwood’s seven children (with 5 different women) showed up for the premier of J Edgar. We’re familiar with Alison Eastwood, 39, – she’s acted in and directed a few movies and started a clothing line called Eastwood Ranch. Her half brother Scott Eastwood, 25, is new to us, and he looks a lot like his dad. Scott is an aspiring actor and he’s appeared in 7 or 8 movies – his next is “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D” coming out in 2012. The last name of Eastwood opens doors in Hollywood.

ADRIAN GRENIER DRIVES A HARD BARGAIN AT HIS YARD SALE

Los Angeles might be the yard sale capital of the world. The weather is perfect and there are lots of green outdoor spaces to have a sale. Entourage star Adrian Grenier is moving and he had a lot of stuff to get rid of, so he had a yard sale this Sunday at his Los Feliz home. He playfully bargained with shoppers, played with their dogs, and generally got his asking price. Adrian plans to invest the profits in his organization that promotes eco conscious living.
