We almost didn’t recognize Serena Williams in this photo from New York – she looks fantastic! Serena has always loved fashion but it didn’t always love her. On the tennis court this champ amused the crowd with some zany outfits and when she dressed up, she wore shiny, tight fitting clothes that didn’t flatter her muscular physique. (Hate to say it, but sometimes she looked like a man in a dress!) Speaking of which, we’re thinking she cut back on steroids or SOMETHING because her body is still strong, but way more feminine and sleek.

We’re not surprised that Jennifer Aniston isn’t thrusting her new engagement ring in paparazzi faces. It seems we’ve gotten accustomed to shallow celebrities who only feel worthy if they have a gigantic ring bigger than anyone else’s to prove their superiority. It’s a vulgar display of one-up-manship when the real issue should be love and happiness. Of course, Kim Kardashian and her exaggerated million dollar ring is a prime example of that type of vanity. Look how long her showy marriage lasted. Jennifer doesn’t need her ego inflated with a jumbo ring. She’s happy with her man, Justin Theroux, and whatever he gave her. Guess who popped up on a yacht in Croatia! We haven’t seen Tina Turner in awhile and she looks to be in great spirits. She flew in to Dubrovnik, Croatia to join friends on a Swiss millionaire’s gigantic yacht (one of the 100 biggest in the world) where she will be partying this week. The happy singer is still living in Switzerland with her German music executive boyfriend Erwin Bach, and they’ve been together since since 1985. Tina couldn’t resist dancing around after lunch.

Apparently Cindy Crawford isn’t the only one contributing to the next generation of models. Christy Turlington’s daughter Grace, 8, is featured I Bruce Weber’s photos in DuJour magazine with her mother. Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia, 11, has already modeled for Versace, but Cindy says school comes first. Christy is married to actor/director Ed Burns and she says little Grace is “eight going on fourteen.”

MONTGOMERY CLIFT WAS PHYLLIS THAXTER’S UNREQUITED LOVE

Actress Phyllis Thaxter died at the age of 92 on August 14, and we remember her as usually playing good-girl types like she did in “She’s Working Her Way Through College “ with Ronald Reagan. But her private life turned out to be more interesting than we expected. Her daughter Skye Aubrey shared a secret with The Hollywood Reporter’s Merle Ginsberg. When she was 20, Phyllis costarred with Montgomery Clift, also 20, in the 1940 Broadway play “There Shall Be No Light.” She fell in love with Clift and they moved into an apartment together. Eventually he broke her heart and told her that he didn’t really think he could ever be married. He was right – he never DID marry, and he is now generally believed to have been gay but never came out.

RYAN GOSLING LOOKS HOT IN HIS GANGSTER GARB

Ryan Gosling looks particularly fetching in his vintage clothes for Chinatown reshoots of his movie “Gangster Squad.” The movie featured a big scene with mobsters pelting a movie audience with bullets from behind the screen, but after the Dark Knight Rises movie massacre, they decided to scrap the scene and reshoot. Personally we don’t see why. Nothing can change what happened and the gangster movie scene only slightly resembled the horrible real crime. Of course, one less violent movie scene is FINE with us, but fear of “offending” someone (who?) makes no sense.

MADONNA TAKES HER BOYFRIEND’S FAMILY ON ANOTHER FANCY VACATION

Madonna aims to keep her young boyfriend happy. She’s made a yearly event out of flying his family from Marseilles to the exclusive Hotel du Cap in the French Riviera for ten days in August. Brahim Zaibat, was happy to see his mother Patricia Vidal, 47, (seven years younger than Madonna) and his cousins all together for a vacation. Madonna was there with her four children, Lourdes, Rocco, David and Mercy. Brahim lives in New York now with Madonna and she knows he misses seeing his family. These yearly weekends usually cost well over $100,000. Lourdes reportedly has a crush on one of Brahim’s cousins.

“THE IMPOSSIBLE” – MAYBE THE SCARIEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR

We’ve always thought that nothing is scarier than reality, and we yawned all the way through The Dark Knight Rises and Total >Recall. But this trailer for “The Impossible” is truly frightening because it happened once and can happen again. It’s based on a true story about how a vacationing family survived the 2004 tsunami in Thailand. Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts appear to be perfectly cast in this catastrophic adventure.
