JAMES CHARLES: TRYING WAY TOO HARD

Internet makeup artist James Charles turned up at the MTV VMA show SCREAMING for attention in this terrifying (Blac Chyna inspired?) outfit. We like his Brigitte Nielsen haircut, but from the hair down, he’s a disaster. How many straps, rhinestones, and zippers can be packed onto one ensemble? It’s every current fad rolled into one look. We’re not sure who James’ fans are – young girls who want to learn about makeup, or older men interested in other things. But we’re sure he’s caught everybody’s attention.

BELLA HADID : NAUGHTIER THAN GIGI FOR THE MTV VMA’S

The MTV VMA red carpet arrivals are notoriously sexy and creative – some wear space suits and some wear flying garters. Case in point: Bella Hadid’s strappy outfit will be hard to beat – she already makes her sister Gigi’s attire look plain. Award shows finally figured out that models liven up any red carpet event and started inviting them in quantity. Even the celebrities stop and ogle the models and paparazzi are all over them.

DOES BOBBY BROWN REMINISCE ABOUT THE OLD DAYS?

Bobby Brown looks like a typical suburban dad now, but we remember when he was a hot commodity. We met Bobby years ago at the after-party for the AMA show. That’s when he was riding high with New Edition, but Bobby was really funny, friendly and likeable. So we were not surprised when Whitney Houston fell hard for him. She was almost pathologically jealous of him- she would track him down at a party somewhere and show up and surprise him! (before cellphones) Once we remember him at a party, ducking into a back room looking guilty when word got out that Whitney was at the front door asking for him. He loved her, but he WAS mischievous. Anyway, we bet Bobby’s kids wouldn’t believe that their dad was once a casanova…

MICKEY ROURKE LIKES HIS FRIENDS, BUT HE LOVES HIS DOGS

Mickey Rourke remains one of the most colorful actors around, so when we see him we love to share photos. Mickey had lunch at Mulberry Pizza in Beverly Hills with a bunch of friends who seem far more interested in their phones than the company. Despite his hair challenges and other eccentricities, we’re happy to see Mickey working steadily since his first film, Diner. He averages two or three movies a year (not exactly A-list) but he earns more than enough to keep his collection of dogs well fed. (Remember, in 2009 when Mickey accepted his Best Actor Golden Globe for The Wrestler, he thanked his dogs!)

IS KOURTNEY KARDASHIAN WEARING INFLATABLE PANTS?

At first glance, we thought Kourtney Kardashian was wearing inflatable pants because they looked so round and puffy on her. A closer look revealed that Kourtney was actually wearing some expensive looking brown leather pants when she arrived at a party at The Nice Guy. An odd choice. Not only are they wide but they look stiff – like they could stand up by themselves. Certainly not flattering and decidedly HEAVY for a summer night…

BILLY IDOL: TIME IS ON HIS SIDE TOO

If you wanted to see celebrities on Thursday night you should have gone to the Rolling Stones concert at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It’s a gigantic stadium, but we’re sure the famous people were sitting in the best section, with VIP parking etc. Otherwise it could be a madhouse. Billy Idol is one of our favorite celebs to show up – and he still looks cool… Billy wasn’t dancing with himself, he was with his girlfriend China Chow.

LIAM HEMSWORTH: WHAT HE DIDN’T KNOW

It’s evident that Liam Hemsworth was confused about WHEN he and Miley Cyrus actually split up. In other words – HE thought they had a big fight and Miley went somewhere to cool off. He was waiting for her to return when he was blindsided with photos of her smooching in Europe with Kaitlynn Carter. At first, he thought Miley was childishly acting up to punish him and she would come to her senses. But when Miley and Kaitlynn were described as “basically having sex” in an LA club he was humiliated and hurt. Only then did he realize that she MEANT the hurtful things she said before she left. When he filed for divorce the date of their split was TBD (to be determined) because Miley split long before Liam even realized it.

ISLA FISHER IS FUNNY IN HER OWN WAY

Isla Fisher married Sacha Baron Cohen in 2010 and they have three children and seem quite happy in spite of his off-beat sense of humor. (Borat is the first comedy that made us laugh so hard we fell fall out of our theater seat.) Isla works steadily in Hollywood and Sacha has an interesting new role. He’s starring in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film The Trial of the Chicago 7. Sacha is playing Abbie Hoffman, Seth Rogan is Jerry Rubin, and Eddie Redmayne is Tom Hayden. It’s NOT a comedy.

LIAM HEMSWORTH CHOSE THE HIGH ROAD

Apparently the breaking point for Liam Hemsworth was when his wife Miley Cyrus was described as “basically having sex” at a Hollywood club with Kaitlynn Carter. Miley had been smooching in public with Kaitlynn on two continents, but this was the last straw. After all that public humiliation and complete disrespect, Liam never said a bad word about Miley, he simply filed for divorce like a gentleman, and wished her well. We have to admire him for his self-control. There is no doubt that Liam and Miley still have feelings for each other, but Miley has a lot of growing up to do, and they just might not be right for each other.

“MRS MAISEL” KNOWS HOW TO USE SPECIAL EFFECTS

SO happy to see that Rachel Brosnahan is in New York filming the next season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. We are totally addicted to the look of this series. Not only are the late 1950’s fashions (and hairstyles) spectacular for all the characters, but the sets are mind-blowing. This season’s midcentury Catskill resort was perfection, but we fondly remember the first season when there were dazzling street scenes in New York’s garment district with every car, building, and garment true to the era. And racks and racks of fifties frocks were being rolled down the street just like the old days. These are the kind of turn-back-time special effects we appreciate – NOT explosions and car crashes…
