Women’s Rights

FINALLY – A REASON TO LIKE KRISTEN STEWART!

It’s not about the hair- it’s about her FEET! Kristen Stewart, who always seems so disinterested in everything, surprised us by stepping up to the plate for women’s rights in Cannes! Back in 2015 women were appalled when they were BANNED from the red carpet for WEARING FLAT SHOES! The incident made the whole festival look archaic and insulting to women. This year Kristen tested the waters and went barefoot and carried her shoes on one carpet and last night she defiantly WORE FLAT SHOES. She said “If men don’t have to wear heels, why should WE? She wants equal rights. Nobody asked her to leave.

THE DIVINE ORDER REVEALS SWITZERLAND’S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

Suddenly it turns out that Switzerland is not the superior progressive country we always thought it was! Screenwriter/director Petra Volpe has let us in on Switzerland’s dirty little secret in her new movie The Divine Order – women didn’t get the vote there until 1971! Impossible to believe, but TRUE. Switzerland’s patriarchal system kept women oppressed THAT long! Despite the timely subject matter, the movie, about small town women waking up to the desire for equality, is charming, sometimes funny, and quite likeable. The best part about it is it teaches men what they did and still do wrong. It’s a nice lesson to be learned.

THANK YOU ANGELINA JOLIE, FOR SUPPORTING WOMEN’S RIGHTS

Angelina Jolie is one of the rare celebrities who takes time to personally support her causes. She and Brad showed up at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence where she made a passionate speech. Warzone sexual violence against women is destroying lives, particularly in Syria, South Sudan, and Central African Republic. Angelina hopes to change the laws in these countries and criminalize these actions. We continue to wonder WHY the USA sends billions of dollars of relief to countries where women have far less than equal rights. And while Angelina is busy doing this, Lana Del Rey was telling The Guardian that she doesn’t enjoy her fame and success and wishes she was dead already.

IKEA IS PANDERING TO MISOGYNISTS

#ikea #janetcharlton

Is anybody else tired of “respecting” other people’s religions even when it means demeaning and insulting women? And to think we always had such a high opinion of Ikea! It has been revealed by the Stockholm paper Metro, that ALL WOMEN have been deleted from the Ikea catalog for Saudi Arabia! Every image of a female – including a photo of Audrey Hepburn was edited OUT. Ikea is in the habit of tailoring catalogs for each country to appeal to local taste and cultural standards but THIS is too much. When confronted with this insult to women, an Ikea rep gulped and admitted the move is “in conflict with company values and Ikea is reviewing its procedures.” No kidding.
UPDATE: This morning Star Jones said she didn’t see anything wrong with what Ikea did.

ANN CURRY: DON’T LET US SEE YOU IN THAT HEAD SCARF AGAIN!

This morning we were greeted with the TV image of Ann Curry, whom we love, On the Today show interviewing Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and she was wearing a HEAD SCARF! Our blood started to boil. The somewhat soft content of the interview that was described as “too kind” – pointing out how hard the man works- was NOTHING compared to the humiliating and demeaning fact that Ann was forced to dress like a second class female citizen in that country. She is an American and should NOT have to bend to Muslim rituals while interviewing the preening Hitler of the Middle East. It was an insult to women everywhere. What would Gloria Steinem think? Please Anne, don’t put yourself in an inferior position like this again. You should receive equal treatment in an interview.

THAT’S NO ACTRESS- THAT’S A QUEEN!

This exceptionally attractive woman walking briskly in Central Park is not just another model or actress on Gossip Girl– she happens to be Queen Rania of Jordan. College educated Rania is the wife of King Abdullah II and they have four children. We were happy to learn she is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, and that women in Jordan are NOT forced to wear head coverings.
