HBO MINISERIES “MILDRED PIERCE” WITH KATE WINSLET IS COMING IN MARCH

Todd Haynes can do no wrong in our book, because he’s responsible for one of our all time favorite movies – “Far From Heaven.” So we are eagerly anticipating Todd’s HBO version of “Mildred Pierce” airing in March. The miniseries stars Kate Winslet, Guy Pierce, and Evan Rachel Wood as Veda, the poisonous daughter. Joan Crawford’s pumps are hard to fill, but we hear Kate does an amazing job. Check out the trailer.

  1. It does looks interesting, and I’m a Winslet and Haynes fan (also LOVED Far From Heaven, which was a different version of All that Heaven Allows, w/ Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson…), but, I think I’ll stick to the original classic. 🙂

  2. Hilary is dead on right. this looks interesting, but not at ALL a “Mildred Pierce”, perhaps only in title and premise and charactors. Winslet is far too young and pretty, no matter HOW you ugly her up, she can’t be turned into anything CLOSE to the hideousness that was Joan Crawford with her eyebrow hawks, killer slash mouth, and football player shoulders. She had a manliness to her that couldn’t be erased with makeup and hairdo’s or tight-waisted dresses.

The original Veda was a perfect beautiful horrible little bitch that made you want to strangle her yourself. She ran away to sing in a dive joint, not this glorified opera-like vision.

It MIGHT turn out to be perfectly fine. But I have a problem with the classics being fucked with. They USUALLY don’t come CLOSE to being the classics the originals were, thus: why bother?

Can you imagine another “Maltese Falcon” or ANYBODY in the main roll besides Bogie? Some movies just should be left alone. You want to go make a movie? Make something original. Most people are sick to death of the TV remakes and now our classics being messed with. Can you imagine someone trying to re-write “Gone with the Wind?”

  3. Looks like good one! The actors are all very good so it should be a pleasure to watch. I am quite sure this movie will have it’s own twists and turns to it to make it different from the original.

  4. This looks promising and the cast is surely well assembled. Winslet has one of those faces you can mold into nearly any role, almost like Meryl Streep. I find it refreshing there are still actors out there who know the craft and don’t mess with their faces. I’ll sure watch it. Thanks Janet

  5. The HBO series is supposed to take more of its plot from the book than the original movie. I usually love Kate Winslet in anything (warm up that Emmy now) and Evan Rachel Wood will make a perfectly horrid Veda.

  6. I’m still watching because Winslet will surprise us. She’s not good ole Joan Crawford but then, who could be. It will be good to watch the remake.

I’ll be watching with a big, bowl of popcorn!!! LOL!!!

  7. I agree Reta. There can be none as deliciously vile as fan favorite “GET OUT, GET OUT Veda. GET OUT before I kill you”! Simply superb.

As for the lovely Miss Crawford, the Mr and I would often lunch with JC at Romanoff’s. She was absolutely delighful. Full of life, vigor and gaiety.

No one in Hollywood could wash down the stuffed cabbage or Cobb Salad with a fifth of Smirnoff like our Joanie. We just always made sure we were in our car well before she hit the streets in hers.

  8. I heard (from HBO source) that’s it’s not getting good reviews. I’ll watch 1st episode, then decide.

  9. The Joan Crawford version of Mildred Pierce is overated, I’m looking forward to watching this version.
