EVEN JOHNNY DEPP CAN’T WIN ‘EM ALL

Keith Richards looks like he might be consoling his buddy Johnny Depp over losing the starring role as Freddie Mercury. But Johnny’s dance card is full – he’s in the process of finishing the 4th Pirates of the Caribbean movie (he still has his makeup on in this photo) and has three more films about to be released: “The Tourist,”The Rum Diary,” and “Rango.” Plus he has 13 movies currently in development.

  1. The Pirates franchise and Tim Burton films – as fun and great as they may be – could be hurting Depp’s career.

Even when an actor, if much of your time on the job involves you looking like you are going out to trick or treat, you might want to rethink your career path.

  2. Depp is a blast and a great person in real life. However if he would have got the Mercury role he would have destroyed IT and IT would have destroyed him. That would have gone down in history as one of the worst all time casting choices of all time. Perhaps a blind man made the choice? If it would have been him, that would have been MY guess. Thank goodness Depp is still in tact AND Cohen is on track for a much better suited role as the brilliant Mercury. Bring it ON!!!

  3. I have to disagree with you Sebastian, Diehards didn’t hurt Bruce Willis career. He’s still humming along. Fred Mecury would have been a bad career move to me and I agree with Reta on that.

  4. But Lenny, Willis’ Diehard character was not literally a cartoon. I was not talking about franchises, but about really over-the-top roles. Batman ruined Adam West’s career.

  5. And…what has Depp done recently – outside of the latest Pirates or Tim Burton movie – that has really captured the public’s imagination or heart?

Depp has a great deal of admiration and respect from people in the film industry, and wannabees, but I am not sure that that translates completely to the general movie-going public.

Depp is best known in America as Captain Jack. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that pisses him off. He knows there is a problem.

  6. Has no one noticed the ridiculous shoes that Keith Richards is wearing?

  7. I can’t take another Pirates movie. the third one burned me. I’ll wait and see what the reaction to this one is, but I wont be watching it. I still watch the first one, but the other two, no…
That said, I dig JD and KR and think they are just older/younger versions of one another…

  8. Unindicted: The shoes and the dangling cig. Keith is one world hardened dude.

  9. Sebastian, Adam West career was ruined because he was a one dimensional actor. Johnny Depp can put off almost any role he likes because he’s that good an actor.

  10. Adam West was NEVER known as an “actor”. Name ONE fantastic role he ever did. He was damn lucky he got that TV Batman role. It made him rich rich rich and a name. Depp IS known as being a very talented actor. As I said earlier, Sweeney Todd was terrific, both he and Cohen were dynamite in it.
Love all of Tim Burtons brilliant and wildly inventive creations. I hope as long as I’m alive he’ll still be producing just as brilliant and fantastical movies and etceteras. SOMEONE has to feed me.
As for KR shoes, above…LOVE THEM!!! And love a man who is so assured in his manhood that he CAN sport bright aqua shoes and STILL know his balls swing left to right!

  11. but AIDS & FUCKING BOYS wasn’t the problem with johnny, folks!!

  12. Lenny and Reta, sorry to sound so cynical, but Depp is not so much known as a good or great actor. He is known as Captain Jack Sparrow. And I am not in any way comparing his acting talent to West’s. I am just drawing a parallel between their situations. There were many worse actors than West who did much better than he, and there are many better actors than Depp who have not achieved his success.

  13. Well, you may be remembering mainly the Jack Sparrow rols, but Depp HAS done many movies out of that charactor. Most of them pretty good. I don’t discount him for trying to get as much cash as possible, hell, that’s a huge part of going into that profession and hoping for that level of success. I’d take his Jack Sparrow in whatever numbered version anyday, than the off-putting Joaquin Phoenix after his bullshit self-indulgent hoax. Not clever, NOT funny, Not a great idea…a fantastic waste of film, time, two good actors…???? YES!! And I’m PISSED that he dragged down his brother-in-law with him during this moronic year of fake crazy. Too bad they can’t get a spanking and be sent to their rooms….permanently!!

  14. Yes, but Reta, Depp has to accept the results of his decisions. He wants to be seen as a real artiste, but chose to take on a cornball sell-out franchise like Pirates.

And yes, he has has held other roles, but how successful were these over all? Could the average person name three movies Depp was in that were not Burton movies or Pirates movies?

Seems Depp wants to have his cake and eat it too. And the loss of the Mercury role is the first sign of a tummy ache.

In a certain sense, I see no difference between Depp and Phoenix.

  15. Seabastin, I agree with you. Depp is not known for being a talented actor. He’s decent. He has his looks and demeanor to thank for getting him this far!!!

And your last line was perfect!
