REMEMBER SLY STONE AND HIS SOLID GOLD WEDDING?

Sly-Stone--Kathy-Silvacut

Back in 1974, Sly (of Sly and The Family Stone) got MARRIED to his girlfriend Kathy Silva at a bizarre ceremony in New York and WE WERE THERE! To be honest we don’t remember a lot of the details. but we do recall that plenty of New York celebrities were there like Andy Warhol. It was a big deal with lots of publicity and paparazzi. The ceremony took place in Madison Square Garden, of all places, and the reception was at the Waldorf hotel Starlight Roof. Sly and Kathy were dressed in gold by Halston and all guests were urged to wear gold also. The brainy staff at Dangerous Minds dug up all kinds of information about the forgotten event and it certainly brought back memories. The video shows a bit of the ceremony plus snippets of reports from a young Geraldo Rivera! In those days, Sly kept his cocaine in pocket size film canisters – the kind you brought to the drugstore to be developed. He figured police wouldn’t open them and risk ruining the photos.

EVEN WHEN HE HAD MONEY, SLY STONE LIVED IN A VEHICLE

This isn’t the first time Sly Stone has lived in a vehicle rather than a home. Back in the 70’s he had a large house on Bel Air Road that once belonged to John Phillips of The Mamas and Papas. The lavish grounds were even occupied by peacocks when Sly bought the place. Sly had an enormous entourage of drug and music oriented people hanging out, cooking and living off him in the house. Instead of chasing them away, Sly ended up living in his large Winnebago in the driveway. He traveled in the Winnebago instead of a car because he believed police couldn’t search his “home” without a warrant, like they could his car. So he felt safer with his drugs. It’s sad that bad choices and economic misfortune has reduced such a talented musician to living in a camper van in Crenshaw, but maybe he’s not as miserable as we assume.

GIVE SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE A CHANCE – AT THE HOUSE OF BLUES

Sly, along with some of The Family Stone are still trying to forge a comeback and they’re booked Friday, April 25, at the House of Blues in Anaheim. Let’s hope the show is longer than the brief but tantalizing appearance he made onstage at the 2006 Grammys. It’s only too easy to imagine what happened to Sly in all these years since his raging popularity in the funk-mad early 70’s. (He was the first rockstar we ever saw with a portable phone – it was the size of a thick briefcase. Sly wanted to be able to call his lawyer at the drop of a rolled up hundred dollar bill.) He’s got a bad back and he’s hunched over now. Sly says he fell off a cliff walking in his yard. We just hope he shows up Friday – with or without the mohawk.
