JENNY MCCARTHY IS SMARTER THAN SHE LOOKS

Jenny McCarthy’s appearance on Oprah talking about her breakup with Jim Carrey inspired a source to call and tell us the OTHER side of the story. This Playboy source revealed that Jenny, who seems so sweet, actually STALKED Jim Carrey some years ago when he started going to the Playboy mansion. When Jenny first met Jim, she kept her son a secret so she wouldn’t scare him off. Jenny was smart and Jim was very good to her. Oprah avoids anything related to Playboy, but she likes Jim and when he introduced her to Jenny and the talk show idea came up, Oprah was open minded. It seems to be common knowledge among Jenny’s Playboy friends that she walked away from her romance with Jim Carrey with five million dollars, a Beverly Hills house, and a talk show backed by Oprah. Not a bad haul.

Kelly Osbourne has not only survived that bustup with her suspiciously femme boyfriend Luke Worrall, but she came out the other end looking better than she EVER has. Her weight seems to be under control. She must be VERY happy with her appearance or Kelly would never have had the nerve to sing and dance with the Pussycat Dolls at the Viper Room. You KNOW she’s confident when she can stand up to those sexy Dolls. Kelly will no doubt go on to bigger and better things than Luke.

Jessica Biel and Justin are living together in New York so it won’t be smooth an easy split. Lately they’ve been spending more and more time apart and Justin is distracted and less attentive. He even made fun of Jessica’s new movie “The A-Team.” What’s more, he’s been pursuing other women. This romance is OVER and Jessica might be the last to know. MATT LAUER’S TALKATIVE MOTHER-IN-LAW STARTED SPLIT RUMORS

We‘ve been picturing Today Show host Matt Lauer tomcatting all over Cannes since the Enquirer announced he split and moved out on his wife two months ago. But maybe not. Matt’s mother in law in the Netherlands told the magazine about the split but didn’t say what caused it. Another source insisted Matt was caught cheating while covering the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It all sounds plausible, but Matt insists the story is 100% WRONG and he has never moved out of their apartment. Time will tell, and Matt’s bosses at NBC hope he keeps his marriage intact to maintain his image with female viewers.

Halle has a lot to discuss herself – she’s likely to be facing custody problems with her exboyfriend Gabriel Aubry over their daughter Nahla. He’s decided he wants equal time with their baby.

It’s amazing that unmarried partners for 23 years, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, broke up MONTHS ago and nobody noticed. Apparently neither of them have started seriously dating anybody else yet, so no one suspected their relationship was over. Their two sons are big boys now – Miles is 17 and Jack is 20 – so the drama will be minimal. Splitting up their way is SO much less messy than divorcing. Still, it’s bittersweet because we did like them as a couple. Susan, above, has her puppies to keep her warm.

She walked out with an extra-long set of hair extensions. (And she appears to have dropped a few pounds.) Sam, on the other hand, hung out with her buddy (and fellow DJ) Benji Madden, and chatted over coffee in Larchmont Village.

We were wondering WHY Mischa Barton broke up with her rocker boyfriend Taylor Locke and we dug up an amusing piece of information. Apparently the pair had been working in far flung places during the months they were together and actually spent very little time in each other’s company. Not long ago they took a three week trip together to Africa on a charity junket for Save the >Children. The togetherness was too much. Their accommodations weren’t always luxurious and Taylor never stopped complaining. Mischa couldn’t tolerate his “continuous whining” and as soon as they returned home, she called the romance off. She was last seen in London in the company of Josh Hartnett.

Last weekend Salma Hayek invited family members together for an unusually serious lunch. Now we know why. She obviously announced to them that her engagement to the father of her child, billionaire Francois Henri-Pinault, had been called off. No wedding. Not all that surprising considering their abrupt relationship. Still, if you’re going to have a baby without marriage it’s nice to give your child a wealthy father. After the lunch, Salma cheered herself up with some shoe shopping with little Valentina.
