It always surprises me how journalists keep up their relationships with people they’ve interviewed in the past and how they know someone everywhere in the world that they can call on when something monumental happens. I’m talking about New York Times and CBC journalists. Eventually I realized that journalism is not just about research, developing perspectives and writing; (a) it requires amazing interpersonal skills, beyond what I could imagine having and (b) it requires filing tiny details away in your mind that you only noticed because you have such an inquiring mind.
I think Janet is a gossip columnist with the heart of a journalist and that is why she is so good at cultivating relationships.
