WHY JOAN RIVERS DOESN’T THINK CHELSEA HANDLER IS FUNNY

joanchelsea Joan Rivers badmouthed Chelsea Handler by calling her “not funny.” After all, Joan was the first female late night talk show host and Chelsea is the second. (Women should be supportive of each other.) Of course Chelsea has lasted longer – her E! show “Chelsea Lately” has been on the air since 2007. Since Chelsea IS definitely funny, we wonder if Joan begrudges Handler her job because Chelsea’s boyfriend is Ted Harbert is CEO boss of the E! channel. A legitimate beef, but not from Joan, who is guilty of engaging in the same nepotism for her daughter Melissa. Maybe Joan just dislikes everything on the E! channel since she and Melissa stopped doing red carpet coverage for them.

We don’t. We don’t care WHAT Paula tweets. She moaned “With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to Idol.” Haul out the violins. We think it’s another carefully orchestrated drama and both sides are enjoying the resulting publicity and attention. It’s all about the MONEY! Paula wants 20 million and Idol producers are giving her a hard time, but both sides will give in and reach an agreement. (Can you really imagine the show without unpredictable Paula?) Meanwhile, they’re both thoroughly enjoying the uproar.

ROB PATTINSON WILL SWEEP THE TEEN CHOICE AWARDS

There is simply NO WAY the Teen Choice Awards could go on the air without Rob Pattinson in attendance. The Jonas Brothers, who are hosting, will have to step aside when the Twilight people take over the stage. We’re betting Rob and his group (but mostly Rob) will take home major awards on Monday, August 10. He arrived at LAX yesterday, carrying his own luggage. Hmmm. That means he’ll be in LA all weekend…..

IS IT EMMA ROBERTS OR “SOPHIE WISDOM?”

Emma Roberts is only 18, but she’s really feeling important these days. The “Nancy Drew” actress, who happens to be Julia Roberts’ niece, recently moved into a condo in West Hollywood. She told everyone there that her name is “Sophie Wisdom” and that’s the name she has on her mailbox. She insists that everyone in the building address her as “Sophie” and when her dates arrive, the doorman calls up for “Sophie.” Neighbors are perplexed by the alias because they know who she is. If we were Hilary Duff, we’d complain about this dress she’s been given to wear on “Gossip Girl.” The girls on the show usually have such cool outfits, and this drapey black and gold cocktail dress really does NOTHING for Hilary. She’s appearing on several episodes, and maybe they want her character to look older. She was seen shopping in Barneys over the weekend and this dress definitely didn’t come from THAT store. THE FIRST MOTHER-IN-LAW HAS A FAN IN ANDERSON COOPER

CNN’s Anderson Cooper was dazzled when he met the Obama family and he particularly hit it off with the First Mother–in-Law, who also lives in the White House. Recently he bought Michelle’s mother Marian a gift – a photo album – and he put several of his own photos in it for her. When he told his CNN co-anchor Erica Hill about it, she just HAD to get into the act – she coaxed him into including some photos of her too – she’s a huge Obama fan.

RIHANNA DOESN’T WANT CHRIS BROWN TO STAY AWAY

Just as we’ve been telling you all along, Rihanna and Chris Brown have been in constant touch and ARE planning to get back together sometime after his sentencing Wednesday. She has already taken the very important FIRST step toward reconciliation. Rihanna is REQUESTING a less restrictive protective order against Chris. That means he won’t have to stay fifty yards away – he can sit on her lap if she lets him – and you can bet she will. They’ve been postponing resuming their romance until their handlers felt a reasonable amount of time had passed and Chris seemed sufficiently sorry. Will fans forgive and forget?
