The tragedy of the murders of Rob and Michele Reiner is especially jarring for this celebrity couple, as they too have a child diagnosed with schizophrenia. They’ve done their absolute best to keep the health diagnosis private (since their image is incredibly important to them and mental illness just would not be good for their brand) but they are paying for their offspring to get excellent medical care. Nonetheless they are terrified, and recently hired round the clock security to protect them as they are worried their kid could snap at any moment.

The sad part of this story is the parents. You have two adults paying for “care” without understanding the difference between treatment and lack of treatment. The Reiner guy also had a drug dependency which makes everyone volatile. If their offspring takes meds daily and has access to behavioral therapy as needed they can remain stable for a decade. Sometimes schizophrenia patients and others get confused because the drugs make them feel normal so they stop taking them thinking that they don’t need them, but this is very common and if you have people engaged in your welfare and care this won’t happen as often and it’s completely reversible once they start taking their medication again. Not all schizophrenia patients are violent. Many are just tortured with mental delusions sounds and visions that can be corrected with the right blend of medication.
