WAS NEIL PATRICK HARRIS TOO NICE AS OSCAR HOST?

nail patrick.

Neil Patrick Harris must have felt quite a weight off his blue velvet shoulders when the Oscar show ended – he celebrated at a party at The Palm restaurant afterward. Hosting the Academy Awards is an enormous amount of pressure, especially for someone who’s not a spontaneous comic. Neil is adorable and can sing and dance, but he lacks the edge and spontaniety of comedians like Ellen Degeneres, Ricky Gervais, or Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Poking a little fun at spoiled movie stars is always a delight.

  1. Since when does DeGeneres have “edge and spontaneity?”
The Oscars aren’t the Golden Globes where anything goes.
They’re stuffy & hidebound & that’s the way the Academy likes it.

  2. NPH did exactly what he did on the other award shows. It just didn’t fly this time around. His mostly PC light hearted style of soft theatrical comedy just does not appeal to lots of folks. They are bored by it. They want hard hitting put downs and pointed in your face commentary designed to take someone down. That is just not NPH.

  3. The Oscars needs a great comic as host — that’s why the best were Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal.

  4. He was “off” as host… I still think Whoopi Goldberg was great a while back, but I’d also love to see Tina Fey and Amy Poehler take on the Oscars. It is a VERY tough gig…but I’m sure NPH walked out with a very, very fat paycheck. 🙂

  5. he sucked his underpants thing was terrible
i think his ego is overloaded for sure

ellen also sucked then again she isn’t funny anymore if she ever was another ego bigger than any room

    whoopi needs to go away.period.

    billy crystal was good fun
fey and pohler would be the best.

maybe they should let nathan lane in there…..

  6. He was awful. The jokes were bad, his voice was bad (he won a Tony?!), and he was too full of himself. I miss Billy Crystal and even Whoopi Goldberg. But I think the biggested problems were the writing was bad and the show is too long: they should let people give more thanks when they win and they should cut out the junk of the host going into the crowd, etc.

  7. @VERITAS:
Yes, I think Nathan Lane would be the best host. He is naturally funny and a great Broadway actor.

And since most of GollyWeird panders to the gay crowd, he would be much better than over-the-top-in-your-face Neil, whose husband David Burtka seemed always to be in the background. I don’t think Nathan would have flaunted his current partner. All in all, the Oscars and Neil sucked big time.

  8. I’d like to see Nathan Lane or Jimmy Fallon give it a shot. I like N-Pat, and usually he’s a good host, but I think the Oscars was just too much for him. Too bad.
