WILL DANIEL DAY-LEWIS COME OUT OF RETIREMENT?

A clever paparazzi caught
Daniel Day-Lewis walking out of Steven Spielberg’s NY office with Steven and a group of movie bigwigs including Irish playwright/filmmaker Jim (My Left Foot) Sheridan.Everyone looked happy. Coincidentally or NOT, Sheridan has been working on a film called The True Story of Chief Standing Bear. The story is set in Nebraska in 1879 and it’s about the first Native American granted civil rights in the US. One can’t HELP but wonder if Daniel is considering coming OUT of his 2017 retirement for this film. In The Last of the Mohicans (1993), Lewis played a half-white half-native American character successfully. Would he DARE to play a much admired Native American Chief, considering modern racial sensitivities? We shall see…

CAN BRADLEY COOPER FILL STEVE MCQUEEN’S SHOES?

Steven Spielberg must be on a retro kick because he just announced that he is directing a new version of the 1968 classic movie Bullitt starring Bradley Cooper in the Steve McQueen role. We weren’t thrilled with his remake of West Side Story, but he insists this will NOT be a remake, but a whole new idea. (It’s funny that back in the 70’s Spielberg tried to cast McQueen to star in one of his films, but was turned down.) The original Bullitt was about a macho San Francisco cop hunting for a mobster who killed his witness. It has the most famous car chase in film history. Sexy McQueen raced cars and motorcycles in real life, and he put turtleneck sweaters on the map. It will be a challenge for Bradley Cooper, but he could bring a whole new intelligence to the role.

RITA MORENO APPROVES OF SPIELBERG’S REMAKE OF WEST SIDE STORY

Speaking of long careers, let’s not overlook Rita Moreno, 89, who won an Oscar for her 1961 performance as Anita in West Side Story (of course she went on to win an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony too, for various projects.) A documentary of Rita’s life showed at Sundance this year and it includes a sordid but juicy story about her affair with Marlon Brando. In the 90’s, we used to run into Rita every time a cool shop on Sunset Strip had a sale on Martin Margiela clothing – luckily we weren’t the same size. A special role was written for her in Steven Spielberg’s new version of West Side Story, and surprisingly, she loves the new version. We cannot imagine remaking a perfect movie (for better or worse, the film inspired us to have a lifelong obsession with Hispanic men.)

TWO MOGULS AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME

Megastars Bruce Springsteen, 70, and Steven Spielberg, 72, have become such good friends that they took a vacation together with their wives Patti Scialfa and Kate Capshaw in Portofino. They relaxed on yachts and beaches, toured the island, and enjoyed gourmet meals. In August, Bruce created quite a stir in Paterson, New Jersey, when he visited the West Side Story set where Steven was working. Other Portofino visitors soon caught on that Bruce was there, and mobbed him for photos.

SPIELBERG’S “WEST SIDE STORY” REMAKE: WE’RE NOT HOLDING OUR BREATH

That’s Steven Spielberg in the Hawaiian shirt directing dancers in his new version of West Side Story- about which we have mixed feelings. The original film was SO wonderful and successful (10 Oscars including Best Picture) in delicious TECHNICOLOR, (for those who remember)- what is the point of a remake? Can anyone ever top Bernardo (George Chakiris) with his pompadour and purple shirt? We have our doubts.

WHEN YOU’RE A JET, YOU’RE A JET ALL THE WAY, FROM YOUR FIRST CIGARETTE, TO YOUR LAST DYING DAY…

Don’t know WHAT to think about the news that Steven Spielberg is planning to film a remake of West Side Story. The original was SO colorful and fabulous. We will never forget that life-changing moment when George “Bernardo” Chakiris, in that purple shirt, and great posture, appeared at the big dance. It resulted in a lifetime attraction to Latinos in purple shirts. Years later we met George and he still had that dancer’s physique. Very nice man. What can Steven Spielberg possibly have in mind that will improve this movie? We’ll try to keep an open mind… (Above, George Chakiris and Natalie Wood)

WILL THE REAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN PLEASE STAND UP

To think Liam Neeson was almost cast in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.” One look at this photograph of Daniel Day-Lewis in character, and you cannot imagine anyone else playing the part. At first glance, most people think this IS Lincoln in a pensive mood. That’s how convincing Day-Lewis is. The story deals with the last four months of Lincoln’s life when he was dealing with abolishing slavery with a constitutional measure. And Daniel wears those vintage clothes so beautifully. “Lincoln” will be released in November
