CAN BRADLEY COOPER FILL STEVE MCQUEEN’S SHOES?

Steven Spielberg must be on a retro kick because he just announced that he is directing a new version of the 1968 classic movie Bullitt starring Bradley Cooper in the Steve McQueen role. We weren’t thrilled with his remake of West Side Story, but he insists this will NOT be a remake, but a whole new idea. (It’s funny that back in the 70’s Spielberg tried to cast McQueen to star in one of his films, but was turned down.) The original Bullitt was about a macho San Francisco cop hunting for a mobster who killed his witness. It has the most famous car chase in film history. Sexy McQueen raced cars and motorcycles in real life, and he put turtleneck sweaters on the map. It will be a challenge for Bradley Cooper, but he could bring a whole new intelligence to the role.

WHO KNEW STEVE MCQUEEN WAS SUCH A FAN OF JOHN WAYNE?

This vintage photo of Steve McQueen throwing his arms around John Wayne was probably taken before paparazzi even existed. So celebrities weren’t as afraid to look foolish because usually there was no one around the document the situation. Judging by the liquor bottles these two were high as kites and it’s a funny moment. Any of you got a caption for this?

CAN JEREMY RENNER FILL STEVE MCQUEEN’S SHOES?

We confess that we’re torn by the idea of Jeremy Renner starring in the biography of Steve McQueen. Jeremy is so devoted to the project that he’s also producing and set up his own production company to do so. “Bad boy” McQueen was a bigger-than-life movie star in the caliber of Paul Newman, with equally mesmerizing blue eyes. He was known as the “king of cool” and loved fast cars and motorcycles. He starred in “Love With the Proper Stranger,”Bullitt,” “The Great Escape” etc. Steve died in 1980 from incurable cancer in Mexico at the hands of a last-resort quack doctor. The problem is, we’ve always thought of Jeremy Renner as more of a character actor than a romantic leading man. Does he have the looks and charisma to portray McQueen? It remains to be seen.
