MIDCENTURY MODERN WITHOUT LINDA LAVIN?
The much anticipated launch of Midcentury Modern just dropped on Hulu and the reviews are in. The show is not bad, but the best thing about it was the character Sybil, played by the late Linda Lavin. Our well placed source revealed that producers are now hoping to take a cue from The Golden Girls and cast a younger actress to play the part of an older character in season two. Our more mature readers will remember Estelle Getty, who played Bea Arthur’s mother on the 80’s sitcom, was actually YOUNGER than Bea! She wore a wig and makeup to appear older. (Back then producers were upset once when Estelle returned wrinkle free after a summer hiatus because she had a secret facelift during the break!) Midcentury producers don’t want to take the chance on an actress in her eighties or older, so they are quietly looking to cast someone in her sixties and will use wigs and makeup to make her look old enough to be one of the other character’s moms.
