JOAQUIN PHOENIX: FIRST PRESENTER IN A BLACK HOODY

Could NOT take our eyes off of Joaquin Phoenix when he walked onstage at The Golden Globes. He was last year’s Best Actor winner for Joker, so his was an important appearance as a presenter. Phoenix sauntered onstage smirking, clad in sneakers, jeans, and a black hoody. They only thing that separated him from looking like a robber at a 7-Eleven was a skinny black tie. (Being ONSTAGE is not the same as on video at home) The Golden Globes show has strict fashion rules for everyone involved – even for the PRESS, who usually stand outside in front of the Beverly Hilton Hotel and are not on camera. It’s black tie for men (tuxedos) and evening dresses for women or you are sent home. Yes, Joaquin had a black tie, but would a woman have gotten away with this outfit onstage? We remember a few years ago when a gown-clad woman was BANNED from a red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for not wearing HIGH HEELS! IF the pandemic has actually softened fashion rules, designers will be devastated…

JOAQUIN PHOENIX’S UNDERAGE GIRLFRIEND COULDN’T GET INTO HIS PREMIER PARTY

Like many Hollywood actors, Joaquin Phoenix, 39, likes his girlfriends young. He’s currently starring in the Spike Jonze movie “Her,” (above) and getting great reviews . But sometimes dating a teenager can be inconvenient. He brought his girlfriend Allie Teilz, a 19 year old Los Angeles DJ, to the movie’s after-party at a bar in New York. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Allie had no ID and she and Joaquin were detained at the door until someone eventually came from inside the party and escorted them past the bouncer in the door.

“SCIENTOLOGY” INSPIRED MOVIE RESURRECTED WITH JOAQUIN PHOENIX

Back in March we told you about Jeremy Renner dropping out of “The Master” – a movie loosely based on L Ron Hubbard and Scientology, to take a job in Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible IV.” Universal dropped the project for mysterious reasons (Scientology pressure?) but now, according to Deadline.com, the Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will Be Blood”) script has gotten financing and been snapped up by The Weinstein Company and will proceed with Joaquin Phoenix in the Renner role. The original now-untitled script has been extensively rewritten for some reason (Scientology threats?) Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the ambitious self-help “guru” and Phoenix plays his ardent follower. (Ironically, Phoenix was raised by his family in the Children of God religious cult.)

LEONARDO DICAPRIO SHOULD SNAP UP THIS JUICY ROLE AS J EDGAR HOOVER

We’ve long been fascinated by the first FBI Director J Edgar Hoover (from 1935 to his death in 1972) and all the stories about his secret gay proclivities and alleged cross-dressing. Clint Eastwood is intrigued too, and he’s set to direct a biography of Hoover prominently featuring his associate and supposed “lover” Clyde Tolson. The men were inseparable partners but at the time no one DARED question the intimidating Hoover (above right) about his sexual preference. A socialite reported seeing Hoover at a gay orgy dressed in a flouncy black dress, stockings, high heels, and a wig. Another acquaintance thought Hoover was “so straight-laced” that he couldn’t have a normal romantic relationship. Who better to play this many-sided character than Leonardo DiCaprio? Eastwood wants Leo, and he wants Joaquin Phoenix to play Clyde Tolson.

JOAQUIN PHOENIX THINKS HE’S SMARTER THAN HIS AUDIENCE

Apparently Joaquin Phoenix never got to play the role he wanted – that of an unwashed ungrateful slob – so creating the mockumentary “I’m Still Here” appealed to him. Phoenix and filmmaker Casey Affleck hope to pass it off as a documentary but it seems way too contrived and self indulgent. In the film, Joaquin, who was so brilliant in “Walk the Line,” decided he hated acting and quit Hollywood to become a hip hop performer. Along the way he stopped bathing, grew hair in all directions and behaved like a drug addict. The whole concept is absurd. Joaquin has since taken a bath and his agents are actively pursing film roles for him and have several on the table. If there’s a joke here – it’s on anyone who buys a ticket to this movie.

CAN'T LET GO

The TALK of fashion week in New York is not puff sleeves – it’s the apparent coupling of Eva Mendes and Joaquin Phoenix and their fervent denials. Not long ago they finished the movie “We Own the Night ” but can’t seem to let go of each other. Despite the fact that they have been seen together numerous times looking QUITE affectionate (including last Thursday according to Rush & Molloy,) Eva flatly denies a romance. She insists she still has her live-in boyfriend – a handsome film maker named George Gargurevich, but they are rarely seen out together. We sense the makings of a love triangle.
