NCT 127 is just the latest K-pop boy band gaining popularity at a rate that is alarming to many Chinese. These boys who wear makeup, earrings and fancy clothes – and are adored by girls – are perceived as sissies and a threat to the masculine culture of China. An organization called Alpha Club has been established to teach boys how to be strong, confident, and masculine. Boys as young as 7 play American football and endure military discipline to become Alpha males. No makeup allowed.
