The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

TOXIC MASCULINITY RUINED THE DRAGON TATTOO GIRL

If this is Sweden’s idea of Goth, we want nothing to do with it. The Girl in the Spider’s Web is a movie ostensibly about women (most of them horrible people) produced, written and directed entirely BY men FOR men and it is just as absurd as you would expect. All the female characters think and behave exactly like men. There is a sorry lack of plot and instead, an abundance of the mindless car chases and explosions that men love so much. The intelligent and mysterious tech genius Lisbeth Salander character has been reduced to a violent superhero. One interesting note: Lisbeth ’s girlfriend is played by transgender model Andreja Pejic. The rest of the film is dark and dismal, with diminutive Lisbeth (played by Claire Foy) trouncing groups of large men by using weapons and violence instead of her brain power. Previous Dragon Tattoo movies relied on Lisbeth OUTSMARTING men, not decimating them. You will walk out of this movie feeling dreary and depressed.

ROONEY MARA AND HER MAN RARELY GO OUT

Rooney Mara, 33, is always a red carpet rebel – flamboyance is not her middle name. That makes her more interesting than most – while much of Hollywood is at Halloween parties, Rooney stepped out for an animal charity. Yes, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star is wearing a harness, but it is NOT leather. Shy and standoffish, Rooney met her match in Joaquin Phoenix when they costarred in Mary Magdalene and they are now living together rather reclusively in the Hollywood Hills, with NO plans for marriage.

After a world press tour, it’s back to reality for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” star Rooney Mara. She’s in Soho shopping at rag & bone with her boyfriend Charles McDowell. Charles is an aspiring actor and the son of famous parents: Malcolm “Clockwork Orange” McDowell, and Mary Steenburgen, who is now married to Ted Danson. Rooney is preparing for all the award shows she will be attending soon.

CAN ROONEY MARA SAVE “THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO?”

Much will be made of Rooney Mara’s performance in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” because it’s the best thing about the movie. Her Lisbeth Salander character is one of the most unique and memorable female characters in recent literature and readers- especially women – are fascinated by her. Rooney didn’t deviate from the book. But the script adaptation for the book is a huge disappointment. Viewers who didn’t read the book are doomed to two and a half hours of confusion. The complex story needed simplification for the big screen and the result is exasperating. It’s a glossy, well made, quality film that is far too difficult for most people to follow. Blame the script writer.
