SOPHIA LOREN: YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND “THE LIFE AHEAD”

It’s been ten years, but guess who’s back at work! Sophia Loren is on the streets in Italy filming La Vita Davanti a Se (The Life Ahead) with her son Edoardo Ponti directing. She plays a holocaust survivor who bonds with a 12 year old Sengalese immigrant boy. Sophia, 84, has been working 10 hour days, and admits her son is a “perfectionist” and won’t let her leave until she gets each scene “just right.”

Sophia Loren turned out to be the main attraction at a Moscow art exhibition of Niklas Safronov’s work. Niklas is perhaps the most important Russian artist of the early 21st century. He specializes in portraits of famous personalities –performers, politicians etc- with a twist. Sophia is one of his subjects and one of many celebrities who collect his work. Sophia looks great, but we just don’t like her eye glasses.

It’s always fun to see Sophia Loren. She’s connected to a number of businesses – and one of them is the glamorous Italian jewelry company Damiani. They have a pricey Sophia Loren collection and she showed up at a recent PR event, looking spiffy – except for those oversize glasses. She has her own eyewear collection to promote also and might be overdoing it a bit by wearing TWO pairs of glasses at the same time.

Italians are so soccer crazy that games interfered with the Taormina Film Festival Awards. When the Italian team made it into the European championship semifinals, the screenings and ceremonies had to be shifted around at the last minute. All eyes were on the games. Guest of Honor Sophia Loren received an award for her amazing 60 year film career and her prize ceremony was reduced in length to only ten minutes – the duration of halftime in the soccer game! She graciously confessed that SHE was as caught up in the game as everyone else.
