Men in Skirts

QUICK! IS THIS A MAN OR A WOMAN?

If you saw the Thom Browne fashion show in Paris, it might take you awhile to answer. The male and female models wore the same styles -with skirts galore- with most in platform heels. Female models often had lopsided wigs and makeup that made their faces look distorted by a stroke. What we DIDN’T see was anything tight, low cut or sexy – which was rather refreshing. One thing for certain – the actual clothing in Thom Browne stores looks a lot more wearable than the clothing in the show…

MEN IN SKIRTS CLUB: ASAP ROCKY IS AN ACTIVE MEMBER

And so it begins…the summer of THE SKIRT. Just days after Brad Pitt had the world abuzz when he flaunted a skirt to his Bullet Train premier, we have Rihanna’s baby-daddy ASAP Rocky looking right at home in a black leather skirt and Givenchy sweatshirt. Not much of a surprise because fashion-forward Rocky was one of the earliest rappers to try a skirt. We ARE surprised that anyone in their right mind  would choose to wear this outfit on a sizzling hot summer day in New York. Amazing, but some people dress without giving a second thought to the weather. Now that the male skirt is becoming quite acceptable, we can’t help but wonder if the mini-skirt IS NEXT…

J BALVIN SOMETIMES GETS IT RIGHT

Every once in awhile J Balvin likes to surprise the paparazzi and his fans by turning up at an event wearing a skirt. He was first seen last January in the front row at the Louis Vuitton show wearing an LV puffer skirt. Since then, paparazzi keep an eye out for the Colombian singer, hoping for an eccentric photo-op. He did not disappoint this weekend at the Balenciaga Spring show in New York. His Balenciaga skirt is decidedly masculine with metal loops and hardware. Ironically, he’s behind the J Balvin Amor collection for Guess, and his designs are very mundane and uninspired, in pastel colors. His Air Jordan 2 collection got mixed reviews also.

J BALVIN SHOWS HIS LOVE FOR FASHION IN A SKIRT

The late Virgil Abloh’s LAST collection (Fall 2022 menswear) for Louis Vuitton was shown in Paris and it was a BIG deal. It attracted quite a crowd- including Tyler the Creator, Venus Williams, Naomi Campbell, – and fun loving rapper/singer J Balvin. The Colombian heartthrob courageously promoted one of Vuitton’s biggest skirts for men. It’s a “puffer skirt (like the ski jacket fabric) and he wore it with masculine steel toe boots and a black shirt and blazer. Balvin has confessed that he loves fashion as much as he loves music, and it shows.

OUR FAVORITE MET GALA LOOK: PETE DAVIDSON

Just SEEING Pete Davidson SO out of his element at The Met Gala – and wearing a SKIRT- made the whole evening worthwhile. His Thom Browne outfit was original and totally unexpected. At least Pete resisted the urge to wear a TRAIN, which most of the women and a surprising number of men did not. Rihanna stole the night in her long train on that museum staircase a few years ago and designers REMEMBERED. Now loooong trains are a dime a dozen, making socializing at the party inside difficult, at best. (We don’t think clothing should interfere with having FUN!) Our favorite train of the night belonged to Lil Nas X and, sadly, the worst train was worn by Debbie Harry.

MEN IN SKIRTS: IT’S CATCHING ON!

We couldn’t help but notice that a MAN IN A SKIRT was photographed arriving at BOA Steakhouse and hastened to investigate our current favorite fashion peccadillo. The man in the plaid skirt and combat boots turned out to be rapper/singer/songwriter Tyla Yaweh, 25. He has collaborated with his friend Post Malone and is already signed to Epic records and London Entertainment. AND he already has the courage to wear a skirt! It’s not a bad way to get attention – he’s in the company of influencer Tana Mongeau, who appreciates a man in pearls and tattoos.

MEN IN SKIRTS ARE HERE TO STAY

Better get used to the idea of men in skirts, because a LOT of designers – even rather conservative ones- are showing them for Fall/Winter 2021 in London. Burberry is not known for flamboyant fashion and even THEY are promoting skirts – mostly pleated and layered – but definitely skirts. In winter, no less. They even featured skirts with athletic letter jackets like high school lettermen wear. The model in this photo looks reasonably macho with his layers and backpack, but those boots are a surprise – or are they tights…?

PARIS FASHION WEEK: MORE SKIRTS FOR MEN

It’s men’s Fashion Week in Paris again and we wonder how the usually extravagant shows are being put together, considering the fact that last time we heard, Paris was in lockdown with a curfew. But the show must go on, and at first glance we thought this was a female model – but it’s not. Lots of skirts for men on the runways this year. Many are described as “cargo skirts” to up the masculinity factor. This outfit is by Reese Cooper could go either way and it works with sneakers. Most of his clothes have that distinctive little clip on the chest- but what could it be used for?
