Thom Browne LOVES her courageous choices and designs extreme things for her that most people would hesitate to wear. (note the boots) Janelle wore a fabulous outfit to the Met Gala and changed into this skimpier ensemble for the after-parties. Looks like the usually composed actress is REALLY cutting loose on the street outside as she entered Standard party. We wonder what went on INSIDE…

If you invite Janelle Monae somewhere, you can depend on the fact that she will show up dressed to the tuxedo-inspired max. When it comes to fashion, she never disappoints. We cannot help but compare her to the late flamboyant performer Prince. Both were “dandies.” He was 5’2” and loved the color purple. Janelle is 5’0” and loves black and white. They both indulged in fashion fantasies and their music is both unusual and similar. It so happens Prince collaborated with Janelle on her Dirty Computer album shortly before his death, and she credits him for being an inspiration.

JANELLE MONAE JUST WANTS TO HAVE FUN

Designer Thom Browne hooked up fashion-wise with Janelle Monae for the London film Festival, and it’s a match made in heaven. At barely five feet tall, Janelle is a challenge to dress, but she more than makes up for it with enthusiasm for menswear. And NOBODY rocks a hat with more pizazz. She’s played a lot of serious roles on film and would love to have more fun- like Johnny Depp. Janelle says she does NOT admire Johnny as a person, but she does envy his career. She too, would like to play characters like Willy Wonka or Jack Sparrow the pirate – “characters that people would like to dress up as on Halloween.” In the meantime, watch for this fashionista in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery opening Nov 23.

JANELLE MONAE INVITES YOU TO VISIT HER AFROFUTURISTIC WORLD

Looking spiffy as usual, singer Janelle Monae is busily promoting her new BOOK- not album! When it comes to fashion- barely five foot tall Janelle does not disappoint. She says she is inspired by black and white tuxedo combinations and that dandyish look has become the “uniform” of her career. We rarely see her in designer fashions- most of her outfits seem to be created by HER- not a stylist. Having conquered the world of music and fashion, she now aspires to become a successful author. Her book is a collection of short stories by her and friends called The Memory Librarian and Other Stories of Dirty Computer. The description is SO complicated: It takes place in an “afrofuturistic totalitarian world and explores queerness, race, gender, and love, while considering the possibilities of memory and time.” Can you imagine? Hope the subject matter doesn’t scare readers away…

We’ve had weeks and weeks of award show red carpets and fashion shows but our FAVORITE fashionista, Janelle Monae, has been conspicuously absent from all events! Blame it on fish! Janelle has been feeling under the weather due to mercury poisoning. She figured becoming a pescetarian would be healthy, but apparently she ate too many fish for her own good. Luckily she’s recovered sufficiently to perform on the Oscars Sunday. Next step: she’s planning to become a mother!

Sorry, but whenever Janelle Monae shows up for a red carpet event, she is hands down, on the Best Dressed list for us. Frankly, if we never see another low cut gown with a slit skirt and a leg sticking out, we will be SO HAPPY! As usual, Janelle avoided all the clichés and layered an Egyptian inspired Chanel dress over a white knit one for The Golden Globes. As always, creative hair and an unusual hat. Flawless and original.

We think Janelle Monae should be at the top of every Best Dressed list. Her personal style is so spectacular that it almost overshadows her music. If Kanye West, who knows nothing about fashion, can become a clothing tycoon, why isn’t Janelle, who has genuine taste and abundant style, in the fashion biz? Talentless people like the Kardashians are always getting fashion deals, and pretending to design, without much success. Hopefully some fashion company will open their eyes and sign up Janelle…

The show is built around her concept of Afrofuturism – an idea Prince would have loved. She’s also in touch with the reality of today and urges everyone in her audience to register to vote in the lobby after the show.
