On paper The Departed seemed like the last movie on earth we’d want to see. A hyper-macho movie – a nearly all male cast, vulgar, violent, horribly bloody. Another cop movie. But are we glad we gave it a chance! We can’t stop thinking about it – the script was smart, the characters were fascinating, the soundtrack added a new level of excitement. We were HOOKED from beginning to end! It’s almost like the Irish version of Goodfellas. It’s THAT good. Martin Scorcese IS a genius. You’re gonna LOVE this movie.
Huh, Janet,
What made the movie–and ALL GOOD MOVIES GREAT–is the Editing. The unsung hero of good movie making is the edtior who takes all the confusing footage of the director and makes it into a coherent movie. And Scorcese is given too much credit as a great director when he has an ace up his sleeve by having the one of the finest editors (a femal by the way) in the business to make sense of his choas. That editor happens to be THELMA SCHOONMAKER.
Remeber, EDITORS are the ones who make movies great and who end up telling the director what shots he needs to do to complete a scene or to make a scene better.
“The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of
history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always
progressed through the following sequence
1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage ”
Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul,
Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000 Presidential
election
Population of counties won by: Gore: 127 million; Bush: 143 million;
Square miles of land won by: Gore: 580,000; Bush: 2,427,000
States won by: Gore: 19; Bush: 29
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Gore: 13.2; Bush 2.1
Professor Olson adds: “In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won was
mostly the land owned by the tax-paying citizens of this great country.
Gore’s territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned
tenements and living off government welfare…”
Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the “complacency
and apathy” phase of Professor Tyler’s definition of democracy, with some
40 percent of the nation’s population already having reached the
“governmental dependency” phase.
What will happen if the Senate grants Amnesty and citizenship to 20 million
illegal and they become voters?
Isnt this the movie that the old goat Jack was boasting that he told Scorceses. “Hey I had a great idea for a scene about me, 2 women and a strap on.” and Scorcese said ok!” So was this scene in the movie, or did Scorcese pander to the old goat Jack and the smart editor took the scene out? Jack Nicholson is a repulsive dirty old man that looks like he should be sitting on a park bench with a bottle of wine between his legs.
It’s based on some famous Asian flick (read: http://www.laineygossip.com).
