MODERNIST JULIUS SHULMAN AND HIS “VISUAL ACOUSTICS”

modernism

We who love modernism already worship the work of Julius Shulman, and this documentary “Visual Acoustics,” will make it clear why his photography is worthy of such adoration. His architectural photos were responsible for creating the image of the “California lifestyle” in the 50’s and 60’s. (Isn’t that why many of us moved here?) Shulman just died last July at the age of 98 and was working until the end. He was a fascinating and outspoken personality who “discovered” many of the famous architects renowned today. Shulman was so devoted to the optimistic ideals of modernism that during the 1970’s when gussied up “post modernism” appeared, he announced his retirement. He lived long enough to see a bountiful resurgence in the appreciation of modernism, and his work in particular. The architecture around us all, does indeed, shape our lives. You’ll walk out of this documentary knowing exactly what “Visual Acoustics” are.

  1. Thanksk Janet, cant wait to see it. He is a genius – I would love someday to see The Stahl House he made world famous. LOVE his work.

  2. Too bad the president wants citizens to destroy all homes, cars, and fashionable garments; live like bums in caves and grass huts, not use any natural resource to build or mar the land, use lighting or fuel, stand in line for our share of rations so we won’t be fat and get free med advice until we are sick then we must die for the better good, while the rich and powerful control it all as their personal world park and limited to them ‘modern’ goods. Cameras and photos are bad unless he is in all of the pictures and movies.. and filmed in very flattering ways.

  3. Some people ought to be at church pounding their bibles and praying for salvation, and asking for forgiveness for looking at gossip sites.

  4. Hey “dee cee” are you okay? Maybe you should go see a Dr for that condition of yours.

  5. How would you like living in this house during the next earthquake. You would be on TV rolling down the hill head first and the house following accordingly.

Then people Texas, Wisconsin, and Georgia, and the rest of the land will complain ‘why do they build houses on the edge of a boulder mountain, whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Pay them insurance premiums, live for the moment, and enjoy the view.
