Everybody's getting into the discount fashion business these days- maybe the economy has something to do with it. Penelope Cruz and her equally adorable sister Monica are models for the fall collection for Mango - a modestly priced and successful chain of stores that started in Spain and spread all over the world. Madonna designed for H&M, and the Cruz sisters have their own collection for Mango.

Hilary Duff shopped on her own at Trader Joe's and Von's and it looks like she might be cooking dinner for a certain hockey player. We're amused because she looks so innocent and sweet from the front, but the back view is quite different.

Anybody can make a fashion mistake, but this one is a doozy. Kim Kardashian is a natural beauty but she had a major lapse in taste when she wore this outfit to the Ultimate Summer Party sponsored by Sunkist. Her purple mini dress is too short, too shiny, and too tight. And that constricting leather belt in the middle! It couldn't be less flattering and the ankle boots aren't helping to achieve that "summery" look. Poor Kim looks about 20 pounds heavier. Better luck next time.

Nice to see Mary-Kate Olsen looking casual and comfortable. That vintage Kenny Rogers T shirt adds a touch of whimsy. The diminutive twin had a liquid lunch of miso soup with girlfriends at Real Food Daily in West Hollywood. She gave her feet a rest by wearing flat sandals, but she didn't give her lungs a rest - she took a smoke break outside.

Egad! It's time to put in an emergency call to Victoria Beckham- quick before the fashion police arrest Katie Holmes! Apparently Katie's Scientology stylist just isn't up to snuff. We don't know WHAT Posh would think about those jeans and socks. Did Katie put Tom's clothes on top of her own? But the really scarey part is the hairstyle. Katie isn't even 30 yet!
You will probably end up standing in line to see The Dark Knight this weekend and we strongly suggest you do it at an Imax theater. The visual scope of the film is surely one of the most enjoyable parts, so see it the way it was meant to be seen. While we were enthralled by Heath Ledger's creative performance, we had to feel sorry for Christian Bale who starred as Batman. HE is The Dark Knight, after all. Bale is an excellent actor who is being completely ignored while the world concentrates on the late Heath Ledger. Reporters actually have had the gall to insult Bale's intelligence by asking if he felt the so-called "dark role" contributed to Ledger's untimely demise. We have to admire Bale's self control - he was more polite than we would have been. It's a movie based on a COMIC BOOK! Heath wrapped the movie knowing he did an amazing job of acting - he must have been walking on air. What happened later was not related. On a lighter note - we loved the Joker's wardrobe and have a new appreciation for the combo of purple and olive green.
Last weekend we had our first hands-on experience with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's upscale clothing line called "The Row." (It's named after the sartorially famous Savile Rowe in London.) The Olsens are best known for their perky Wal-Mart designs but this collection is obviously a labor of love. It's very expensive and only sold in stores like Barneys New York, Browns in London, and Maxfield. (These are the places the Olsens actually shop at.) Maxfield had their final markdown sale last week and we saw some of the Olsen's lush merchandise, including black leather leggings. We found a pair of unusual long red sleeves reduced to $29 by The Row and we snapped them up.

When you invite the exquisite Dita Von Teese to a party or event, you get more than your money's worth. Every public appearance counts for her and Dita dresses lavishly and appropriately. It's a huge compliment to the host. She makes any event seem more important just because she dresses up for it. No sloppy jeans or flip flops or baseball caps for her. And she's always friendly and smiles and poses for the cameras. Dita is one of a kind.

Daniel Craig admits he has become addicted to Tom Ford's suits. Ford custom designed Craig's wardrobe for "Quantum of Solace," replacing Brioni, the company that previously dressed 007. (Of course, Daniel gets to keep all the suits after the movie wraps.) Each Ford suit can run around $7,500 each and Daniel has already ruined 40 of them in active scenes. Craig HATES to destroy the exquisite suits and says "It's a crime." Obviously, with a staggering 230 million dollar budget, producers can afford the loss. Daniel likes his Ford designs so much that he nixed numerous wardrobe choices and insisted on wearing his own Ford suit for a GQ photo shoot.

Note to Melanie Brown: This is what happens when fashion clouds your logical thinking. Teetering platform boots are not recommended apparel for the airport. There's a lot of walking in terminals and keeping your balance with kids can be difficult. Not to mention the fact that legs in those tight Spice Girl boots might swell up on a long flight. Mel B couldn't live up to her dangerous looking leopard footwear and she gave in and opted for a wheelchair. (That's Angel, her daughter with Eddie Murphy, on her lap.)

Elizabeth Taylor is dolled up in her finest jewelry and high heels for an outing - can you guess where she's going? No - not to the Jose Eber Salon, no, not to La Scala for lunch, and definitely not to Saks Fifth Avenue. La Liz is on her way to the Ed Hardy store on Melrose Avenue to pick up some things for summer. The next time we see her she might be dressed like Madonna in a "Punk is Not Dead" tattooed hoodie, or a rhinestone "Love Kills Slowly" trucker hat. The Ed Hardy store has always showered celebrities with freebies, but this one is a surprise!

Whoa! Tyra Banks must not have practiced posing in the mirror wearing this dress before she left home - she made all the wrong moves for photographers. This angle combined with the overdone gown makes Tyra look much larger than she really is. (But the color looks great on her.) She's on the red carpet here for the Daytime Emmys and the fact that she carried home an award more than makes up for any bad photos.

Not many guys seem to enjoy shopping, but Usher is one of the few that really gets into it. He got his shopping rocks off at H Lorenzo on Sunset Plaza the other day. Spies told us he bought every leather jacket he tried on, jeans galore and shoes too. In the picture you can see the owner Lorenzo Hadar (he also owns that new shop HLNR on Robertson) showing Usher a pair of black patent sneakers. Usher bought those too.

Here's a side of Amy Winehouse we haven't seen much of: her backside! Actually her well rounded bottom seems to go very well with that beehive. On this particular day she was somewhat conservatively outfitted because she had to appear in court with Blake. Hence the grey dress. In spite of her fashion efforts, the judge reprimanded her for "squirming."

At first we thought these puffy pants were just an isolated fashion aberration on Naomi Campbell, but when Ashley Olsen was seen in the same week, sporting a similar pair, we recognized the beginning of a TREND. Maybe harem pants are a natural style retaliation for low-rise skinny pants. Worse of all, we might all be wearing these next year....
Celebrity designers Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez were neck and neck for awhile, - both taking in over 200 million for their women's clothing lines. Now, according to Laurie Pike in Los Angeles magazine, Gwen's lines are earning 20% more each year, while Jennifer's JLO lines are faltering. Gwen's lines L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers are sold everywhere in upscale boutiques, while Jennifer's designs only sell well out of the country. Part of the reason is Gwen is still very involved in her business and consistently wears her own designs. Jennifer USED to promote her track suits by wearing them to The Ivy, but she stopped before she got married. Watch out Jen - when celebrities lose interest in their own fashions, the customers lose interest also.

That guy in the ridiculous outfit walking on the Santa Monica beach turned out to be "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" star Jason Segal. He's filming another movie, "I Love You, Man," and it must be another romantic comedy because an actress was yelling insults at him as he passed her on the sand. Ugg style boots worn with Hawaiian shorts and a wool overcoat aren't exactly the way to a woman's heart.

American Apparel employees were probably looking out their window snickering at the spectacle of Lindsay Lohan modeling the leggings from her new fashion line of legwear on Robertson Blvd. Lindsay has been buying tons of leggings from American Apparel and she was photographed so many times wearing them that she was asked to put her name on a competing line of leggings. We're not particularly impressed with her designs - are you?
Each spring, Anna Wintour, the terrifying editor of Vogue, has an extravagant party - the Met's Costume Institute Gala - and everybody dresses to kill. This year Anna declared the theme was "superheroes" (whatever THAT means) and strongly advised invitees to dress accordingly. She ordered all her Vogue staffers to wear white or silver. Faced with this dilemma, stars' imaginations scattered in all directions.
Scarlett Johansson and Janet Jackson played it safe by wearing white. Scarlett is adorable in her "ballerina gone bad" outfit - especially since it's accessorized with her new engagement ring from Ryan Reynolds. Janet's dress is not that interesting or original but her skin looks gorgeous next to white.
This Olsen Twins photo is noteworthy most of all because they are BOTH SMILING! Ashley and Mary-Kate are starting to look less and less alike. We love the sheer frivolity of Eva Longoria's bold purple pleated silk gown with a train- now THAT'S a party dress!

Prince debuted some new footwear during his performance at Coachella. Usually he wears pointy high heel boots that he has custom made in a color to match every outfit. His new look is a more comfortable round toe platform boot with what appears to be a high lucite wedge. It still gives him that much needed extra four or five inches of height.

Madonna turned up at the Tribeca Film Festival for the opening of her documentary "I Am Because We Are" about the plight of Malawi children. Madonna, who wrote and narrated the film, was NOT accompanied by her husband Guy Ritchie (maybe he's actually working) but she was sporting yet another red string. We're assuming the Kabbalists have nothing to do with this project simply because it's not likely to make a profit.
The Stepford Wives of the polygamist cult in Texas had it worse than we even imagined - at least in the fashion department. Women who didn't adhere to the strict pioneer style clothing and modest demeanor that the men decreed, could NOT go to heaven. Every day, women piled on four or five layers of underwear, leggings, and slips. Over it all they wore their handmade pastel POLYESTER dresses - because polyester is considered practical and "lasts forever." Imagine dressing like THAT and working under the boiling hot Texas sun! Bright colors- especially red- were forbidden. Sensible Skechers lace up shoes completed the fetching uniforms.

Eva Longoria Parker looks sweet walking out of Barneys and we're amazed that she maneuvers so gracefully in those noteworthy sky high wedgie shoes. They're about the same height as the clear lucite stripper shoes that Shauna Sand wears, but a whole lot more subtle. Eva never stumbles and these are at least six inches high.
Amy's starting to accessorize. Maybe she's sorting out ideas for her upcoming fashion collection in which her trademark accessories will be prominently featured. Her wide cinch belts and door knocker earrings will surely be in the Winehouse collection - and note that she's wearing not one, but two lockets with Blake's photo inside.

Okay, Mischa, this has to be one of the goofiest outfits you've ever come up with! (And keep in mind, Mischa Barton is in the habit of BRAGGING that she never uses a stylist and always dresses herself.) Looks like Mischa thought it was winter from the waist up and summer from the ankles down. Sandals and a furry jacket are an odd combo.

Eddie Murphy, dressed in black from head to toe, met a friend for lunch at Mr Chow in Beverly Hills the other day. Eddie always prefers to be seen in the company of a pretty woman so he must not have a girlfriend right now. Last February, he was seeing Nischelle Turner, but that's the last we heard of her.

Looks like Amy Winehouse is getting serious with those germs that seem to have attacked her face. She's pictured here on her way to visit Blake in prison and, except for the hole in her dress, she's looking good. Her beehive is perky and her skin does look better - perhaps due to those rubber gloves she's snapping on. Probably a sensible thing to wear when visiting a prison.

Nobody's perfect. Her stylist must have had the day off when Rihanna turned up at the Kid's Choice Awards in this outfit. Left to her own devices, the usually stylish singer unfortunately combined a bustier and baggy harem pants that have nothing in common and certainly aren't flattering. It's a good thing she's so cute.

We haven't seen David and Victoria Beckham out on the town lately because they've been back in the UK. David got an award for some soccer achievement and the couple celebrated at Baccarat restaurant there. It's interesting how Victoria keeps her face perfectly composed for photos - she's never laughing like a hyena or talking out of the side of her mouth. We're growing ever fonder of that purple handbag.

Scientologists stick together and only consult their own kind, and it's a safe bet there a NOT a lot of stylists or designers among them. So they have to fend for themselves when it comes to fashion, and this is the result.

We feel obligated to run this glamorous photo of Diana Ross in concert at the Sinatra Theater in Florida because we run so many pictures of her without makeup, not looking her best. Usually she's shopping in the supermarket or running errands in her sweats in Beverly Hills. Here she is in full Diana drag. By the way, she'll be on tour through the summer, if you're interested.
Victoria Beckham is enduring a lot of criticism in the UK because instead of using her husband David Beckham as a model for her new dVb brand denim line, she used a lookalike model. Actually it is a very SMART move on her part. For one thing, pictures of David would draw attention AWAY from the jeans and to him. And guys might feel a bit foolish or intimidated buying Beckham's pants. We think Victoria made the right decision.

We find ourselves strangely attracted to these sunglasses that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are wearing - especially the ones on the right. Does anyone know where these glasses came from?
Regarding his necessary hip replacement, Prince been needing the surgery for several years and he's been living with the pain as long as he can. The only reason he's getting the surgery is so he can wear high heels comfortably without limping. Since he started performing, the 49 year old singer has been having high heel boots and shoes custom made to match every pair of pants or suit. As you can see by this fashion show photo, he's sporting the highest heels in the front row. Also, one of his exgirlfriends told us he even has high heel custom BEDROOM SLIPPERS and wears them to bed! Still, the five foot three inch (so he SAYS) singer insists he doesn't wear the high heels to be taller - he says he wears them because the girls LOVE them!
