We happen to love Doris Day movies - she's always so cheerful. She might not be so happy to learn that there's a new biography coming out about her sexy private life. "Doris Day: The Reluctant Star," written by David Bret, will be released in the UK this summer and early leaks reveal some tantalizing assertions. We were floored when the author casually remarked that Doris had crushes on gay men like Rock Hudson and Stephen Boyd. We had no idea Stephen Boyd (really handsome in "Ben Hur" and that New York career girl movie "The Best of Everything") was GAY! Is this common knowledge, or pure conjecture? Any experts out there?

Couldn't say first hand, but this may be wishful thinking ... based in part on Boyd's very gung ho attitude about introducing a gay subtext into his screen relationship with Judah Ben-Hur, played by the recently departed Charlton Heston.

The subtext was the idea of screenplay contributor Gore Vidal, who agreed with the director that the film somehow wasn't working. They told Boyd about the idea, but they DIDN'T tell Heston; the results speak for themselves.

This was all detailed in the book, "The Celluloid Closet," and the excellent documentary of the same name.
Boyd was a magnetic presence -- to put it mildly -- and his work in "Ben-Hur" is riveting.

He was so committed to this portrayal of a boyhood friend who was also a former lover of Ben-Hur, that it would be very easy to construe that he was, in "real life," gay.

Again, I don't believe there is evidence supporting that assertion.

I remember that Stephen Boyd was very much in love with a blond actress (she was in an Elvis movie and a beach movie with George Hamilton. She left hollywood to become a nun. According to the papers Stephen was very upset.

Who cares? I love her movies!

She's still alive and I hope she's happy because she's brought me a lot of happiness with her movies - Pillow Talk is my fave.

Dear Janet: Shouldn't you remove the hateful and ignorant comments above? Would you allow messages with words like N***** or K*** in them to remain as part of this here discussion? Hate Hurts Everybody. Love Heals.

I love Doris Day's movies and her voice and she has cheered me up on many a grim occasion. Who cares about an infatuation she had over 40 years ago? Who hasn't developed a crush on a co-worker? From what I understand she has been an upstanding woman with a big heart and I respect her immensely.

I've had a crush on Rock Hudson. Whether or not he prefers women is beside the point. He's gorgeous and sweet.

How many of us HAVEN'T fallen in love with someone who is inaccessible for one reason or another?

I don't think Doris Hart really cared because she really didn't care for white men as lovers like many female actress do then and today.

I meant Doris Day not Doris Hart the tennis player. From my impression through readings mostly, DH didn't care for men at all.

What do you mean by "more than 95%", gerard? Is it 95% or isn't it? Give us the exact number, since you think you have all the answers!
