Last weekend we had our first hands-on experience with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's upscale clothing line called "The Row." (It's named after the sartorially famous Savile Rowe in London.) The Olsens are best known for their perky Wal-Mart designs but this collection is obviously a labor of love. It's very expensive and only sold in stores like Barneys New York, Browns in London, and Maxfield. (These are the places the Olsens actually shop at.) Maxfield had their final markdown sale last week and we saw some of the Olsen's lush merchandise, including black leather leggings. We found a pair of unusual long red sleeves reduced to $29 by The Row and we snapped them up.

At first we thought these puffy pants were just an isolated fashion aberration on Naomi Campbell, but when Ashley Olsen was seen in the same week, sporting a similar pair, we recognized the beginning of a TREND. Maybe harem pants are a natural style retaliation for low-rise skinny pants. Worse of all, we might all be wearing these next year....
West Village residents on West 13th Street in New York have been wondering if a presidential candidate moved into the neighborhood. The streets are clogged with black SUVs full of bodyguards around the clock. It turned out it's only Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. The twins rented a 10 room apartment with five bedrooms at the modest price (for them) of $12000 a month. One neighbor remarked that the girls "Certainly keep late hours. I was jogging early one morning and they were piling out of their gas guzzlers in their little club outfits."

Ashley Olsen "the healthier looking twin" might be a whiz at negotiating business deals but she has a thing or two to learn about tipping. It seems she has become a frequent customer at Terroni, the hot new restaurant on Beverly. Her favorite dish is the eggplant pasta. Ashley often picks up large takeout orders - over a hundred dollars worth - and, according to our source, she NEVER tips! Does this girl who carries $10,000 handbags think takeout means no tip? Even WE know better than that!

Olsen watchers might be interested to know that Ashley and her assistant were seen at the Fairfax/Melrose newsstand around noon. (At least we THINK it was Ashley - she looked rather healthy and wore a fedora and skinny jeans.) Ashley grabbed all the new fashion mags- including W and Vogue, along with all the gossip mags, and paid the $97 tab with her black AX card. The two girls hopped into her black Mercedes and were gone before almost anyone noticed them.

Who would have guessed the Miss Sixty fashion show in New York would draw such a stellar front row celebrity crowd? Here's a hot group you don't see together very often: Ann Hathaway (holding her boyfriend's knee,) Chloe Sevigny (with long blonde curls,) Ashley Olsen (keeping her distance from Mary-Kate and the Heath drama,) and new mom Milla Jovovich (wondering if she'll fit into those Miss Sixty jeans yet.)
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are in London to introduce their clothing line at Harvey Nichols. They had a party at a restaurant to celebrate the occasion and GUESS WHO showed up - everybody's favorite Amy Winehouse. Amy is known for NOT attending even important events where she might get an award. But she and husband Blake were happy to get all dressed up to welcome Mary-Kate and Ashley. Do you suppose they talked about fashion? This picture makes us wonder what they were all thinking at that moment.

Ashley Olsen popped into Moe's flowers on Melrose Avenue, wearing a cashmere sweater with a marijuana plant on the back and tight jeans. She told the clerk she needed fifteen centerpieces - flower arrangements for a shower she was having for a friend at Chateau Marmont. She selected the flowers and was signing the charge slip when a cab slammed on the brakes outside the shop and three people jumped out. "It's HER!" they squealed. The clerk looked worried when the tourists begged Ashley for a photo, but, according to our source, "she was very normal - sweet and obliging." She said "Sure!" The fans went away happy and Ashley hopped into her black Mercedes SUV with tinted windows, and took off.
Don't underestimate the smarts of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Last week they turned 21 and had their private birthday dinner with around twenty-five of their nearest and dearest at Chateau Marmont. On Friday they had a BIG fancy party for 200 at their house and not only didn't have to pay for it, but they earned money from it. But it wasn't as much as they had hoped. They offered exclusive rights to the party and photos to magazines - hoping it would fetch a million dollars. The highest bidder paid $250,000 for the party exclusive AND paid for the entire event - another $200,000 at least. It's a nice birthday present.
Introducing the new Bond Girls: Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen! One of the producers (who happens to be a female) of Daniel Craig's next James Bond movie is very impressed with Ashley and Mary-Kate and really wants them in the 22nd 007 movie scheduled to start filming in 2008. The Olsens would be the first set of Bond twins. The producer is making the offer as appealing to the girls as possible - there will be no nudity or sex scenes. And the twins will play good girls - not villains. (ER's Goran Visnjic is set to play a villain) The Olsens are seriously considering the offer. In the photo above, we've taken the liberty of morphing the twins photos with Bond girl Ursula Andress to give you a preview of what's to come.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen had dinner with two girlfriends at Nobu two weeks ago and a nearby diner noted some of their idiosyncrasies. The four girls shared several dishes and finished with dessert and coffee. Our spy was still eating and suddenly blurted "Oh, I smell smoke. " He turned and saw the twins both puffing on cigarettes IN the restaurant. Mary Kate and Ashley gave him a snarky look and the host came over and told them "Ladies this is not acceptable." They meekly snubbed out the cigs muttering "Oh, we didn't know!" When the four checks came each girl paid separately - the Olsens with black AX cards. Mary-Kate stood up and went to the bathroom and Ashley watched her and turned to the other girls with a wink and said very sarcastically "LIKE CLOCKWORK!" Makes you wonder what she meant, doesn't it?

We can't pass up another opportunity to gossip about Mary Kate and Ashley's original fashion sense. We LOVE it! And we're proud of Mary-Kate for carrying the same vintage style beaded bag (A nice change from overpriced and obvious "look how rich I am" designer bags) and she uses it appropriately for day and night! An look at those cute shoes with her plaid wrap dress! We don't care what anyone says, girls, you ROCK!

We're going out on a limb here, but, after much consideration, we've decided that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are among the best dressed women in Hollywood. To be honest, we've admired the girls' very opposite and spontaneous style for a long time and we're tired of people dismissing them as "bag ladies." We took a long hard look at the sisters at the HBO party at the Chateau Marmont and realized they have an acute sense of style and drama, and might be the coolest young women in Hollywood. They don't have that safe, cookie cutter look that actresses dressed by stylists have. They take chances - they mix vintage with Paris couture, along with creative accessories. It's obvious they pick out their own clothes and don't just wear whatever is given to them FREE. And they're not afraid to thrown on a little fur now and then! We love these girls who have the courage to look "different!"

Ashley Olsen dropped off her pampered pup at LA Dogworks on Highland - an exclusive and very posh canine resort/spa. They feaure hydrotherapy, massage, daycare, training, and boarding that consists of bunkbeds and flatscreen TV's (like a Four Seasons for dogs.) We can't help but wonder what it's like to wear those six inch high shoes and boots that the petite Olsen sisters favor - both day and night. They must have a terrific sense of balance. We can't remember the last time we saw them in sneakers.

Ashley Olsen must be planning a trip. Shopping alone, she bought several pieces of modest luggage at Beverly Hills Luggage and had the clerk carry it out to her Cadillac and put it in the trunk. She was parked in the red zone but didn't get caught. Since she is carrying a $40,000 Hermes CROCODILE BAG, one might think it odd that she buys such plain luggage. But she's smart - it's the fancy expensive stuff that ends up lost or missing at the airport.

There's a big difference in the way Lindsay Lohan and Ashley Olsen do their shopping at Barneys in Beverly Hills. Lindsay struts around like she owns the place and zeroes in on the most expensive shoes and purses. In this picture her eyes are filled with lust as she examines ridiculously expensive designer handbags. Ashley Olsen is even more shy when she's not in the company of her sister. Here she is inexplicably dressed sort of like a Beverly Hills matron with that "fur" wrap and plain hairdo. She's in the fragrance department looking apologetic - she doesn't advertise the fact that she probably COULD own the place if she wanted to.
